Nicki Minaj narrates her new Minajesty perfume commercial as if reciting a fairy tale. “There comes a time in every girl’s life where she realizes that hidden deep within, deep within the forest of her heart, there lies a queendom” — yes, queendom — “and if she believes, she will reign forever,” Minaj says.
So to an extent, the Minajesty ad (which premiered on Ellen ) is like a lot of other perfume ads: overly moody and elaborate. Minaj runs in a ball gown after a horse to find a castle with two cars, in neon pink and green. And as she does, the ad follows a tired but still reliable formula, one that portrays a new celebrity scent as something rarefied and real (it once was!) but also helped the perfume industry become a $30 billion industry.
But it may also remind Barbs of a story that Minaj has told often, of how this Queens, N.Y., native grew up in a poor household before she went on to be Forbes‘ only female Hip-Hop Cash King, this year being her second time. So while the ad tries its best to seem sentimental, Minaj is actually repeating a fairy tale ending that she rapped ruthlessly in “Come on a Cone”: “When you see me on Ellen , just admit that I’m winning.”
