So how do Eminem and Kendrick Lamar mend a broken heart? With complex and sexually explicit lyrics.
With Em's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 just days away from its November 5 release date, the two Dr. Dre protégés found their first collaboration "Love Game" leaked onto the Internet on Wednesday (October 30).
The track, which samples Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders' 1965 record "Game of Love," starts off with Eminem coming home to find his significant other cheating on him. "Something is burning I can't figure out what/ It's either lust or a cloud of dust," he rhymes before confirming his creeping suspicion. "Left my girl in the house alone/ Is that my soon-to-be-spouse? And the further I walk, the louder," he continues rapping while building sex noises play under the track, giving it a cinematic feel.
Eminem continues his verse in true Slim Shady fashion. Not only does he tear his unfaithful lover down, he also manages to pay homage to several rappers like Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Z, Kanye West, Raekwon and Kwame. "Used to be my fiancé, until you sucked on Wayne, Andre and Kanye/ LeBron, Akon, Jay, Lil' Jon, Raekwon, Ma$e, Polow Da Don, Drake, Dante Ross, James Conway, Kwame," he spits rattling off a list of male suitors.
Kendrick follows suit and weaves a nutty narrative based on the same Sherane character that ignited the conflict on good kid, m.A.A.d city. "You know I want you bad as a Benjamin, I'm delirious/ I want you bad as the head shattered on George Zimmerman," he raps in a choked-up voice, drawing round-about parallels between his lust and want for street justice following the controversial Trayvon Martin murder.
On top of pushing a central narrative, they also have a friendly lyrical joust as they try to outdo each other with complex and witty rhymes. To close, Eminem ends the third verse contemplating numerous ways to murder the cause of his heartbreak. He dreams of a high-speed highway chase and off-ramp burial, as well throwing her off of an 11-story building. "I have infinite hate in my blood, it's mainly because of the game of [love]," he concludes.
