Dapper guys know John Varvatos for his smart duds. But the famed designer is also a huge rock-music fan and even plays a little guitar.
“I’m not very good, but it’s fun anyway,” says Varvatos, who will sign copies of his new book Rock in Fashion from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at his eponymous store at 1020 Lincoln Road.
The coffee table book features personally curated pictures of Varvatos’ favorite musicians who have influenced his style — from Paul McCartney to Varvatos’ old pal, fellow Michiganite Iggy Pop, who posed for a JV ad campaign in 2006.
Don’t look for too many more written works down the pipeline. “I have a full-time job, and this was a very time-consuming process,” admitted Varvatos. “But now that it’s out, it’s a relief and I’m really proud of it.”
The New Yorker — who honed his craft with mega fashion houses Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein — says he is pleased to be visiting his Miami Beach store, which opened in April and is the only freestander in South Florida.
“I love Lincoln Road, and I’d been looking at spaces for a while,” says Varvatos. “It’s worked out really well. The response has been amazing.”
As for upcoming trends in menswear?
“What surprised me is how much the guys dress up in really tailored clothing. I’m seeing more and more of that for fall/winter, regardless of the weather.”
Lea’s back
Lea Thompson doesn’t mind that people still know her as the time-traveling mom who unwittingly tries to commit incest in Back to the Future.
“I’m never going to get away from that role,” laughs Thompson, who will introduce a free 7 p.m. outdoor showing of the film in front of Cinema Paradiso as part of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. “That’s OK. No one can take that away from me. It’s such an enduring movie about how one moment of courage can change your whole life. I feel blessed to have been a part of it.”
Though the Switched at Birth actress doesn’t keep in touch with co-star Michael J. Fox, she follows his work. “He’s super smart and funny, the same he always was.”
Thompson, 52, recently shot a CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode with another BTTF costar, Elisabeth Shue. “I feel like the more we change the less we’ve changed if you know what I mean,” says Thompson, whose guest appearance airs next month.
At 7:15 the same evening, Thompson will do a Q&A at the cinema for her latest movie, Trouble with the Truth, along with co-star John Shea ( Missing).
Don’t be off put by the plot: a divorced couple talking frankly about went wrong between them.
“I realize the idea seems slightly exhausting,” says Thompson, who also co-produced. “But it’s really funny and edge-of-your-seat stuff.”
Shea was the perfect on-screen partner.
“We rehearsed the same day we shot, just pages and pages of dialogue,” says the mother of two, married to her Some Kind of Wonderful director Howard Deutch since 1989. “It seems like we know each other really well but we don’t!”
Couples (together or not) will likely be able to relate to the movie’s characters.
“If you love someone they become part of you. That’s the conversation John and I are having,” Thompson explains. “We’re so honest. We don’t have to hide; we know each other too well. That’s really powerful and interesting to me.”
