MEDFORD — One, two, three…pop.
That is how seniors Ellyn Luebbe and Gerardo Rodriguez found out they were crowned king and queen at Medford High School’s 99th annual Medford Homecoming Coronation on Tuesday night in the high school auditorium, which was filled with family, friends and faculty.
“It feels great,” Rodriguez said. “But I am pretty surprised.”
The night began with the mistresses of ceremony, Hannah Robb and Gianni Solis, introducing the 2013 Homecoming tradition and the court.
Robb and Solis started introductions with the first grade attendants, who held the crowns, including Haylie Hemann, Jake Nihart, Addison Poe and Cain Johannes, as well as junior attendants Aly Noble and Trevor Grems, who presented the crowns.
The homecoming candidates then walked on the stage as a brief description was provided about their favorite color, favorite food, school activities and future plans.
Logan Ahlman and Tyler Keller were first to be seen by the audience, and then pairings of Mariah Berg and Aaron Snyder, Sam Larson and Caleb Wagner, Luebbe and Rodriguez and Emily Nagel and Luke VanZuilen.
After introductions, the auditorium turned into a game show called “The Newly Crowned Game,” where the pairings were asked three questions about their respective partners.
Questions ranged from celebrity marriage predictions to “How would you describe your man’s locker?” and the bonus question asked the boys how they would describe their partner’s driving.
The questions answered correctly earned the pairings points, but it was the incorrect answers brought laughter from the audience.
Berg and Snyder ended up winning the game with 40 points before the crowning of the homecoming king and queen.
That is when each candidate was given a party popper. The girls pulled their poppers first and Luebbe’s contained confetti, then the boys pulled their poppers and Rodriguez was crowned king.
Medford High School has been celebrating homecoming all week with dress-up days and festive sporting events.
The students and staff are "traveling around the world" for their dress-up days, including a Hawaiian cruise on Monday that featured tropical shirts and flip flops; an evening in Paris on Tuesday that featured formal wear throughout the halls; a trip to the North Pole on Wednesday that featured mittens, hats and jackets; a safari in Africa is slated for Thursday; and students and faculty will sport maroon and gold on Friday to welcome the Medford Tigers football team home for a game against the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers.
The week also saw Medford’s first powder puff football tournament on Tuesday night, a visit to the elementary school by the homecoming court on Wednesday and other games and activities leading up to Friday’s 7 p.m. homecoming football game.
Luebbe, a volleyball captain, said she is looking forward to the volleyball and football games this week as well as spending time with friends. Rodriguez agreed, and said he looks forward to having fun this week.
