WHICH environment is more unpredictable: The chaos made by man’s hands, or the one that moves and grows uncontrolled? Jerrick Macasocol presents a collection that tells the story of a woman plucked from nature and planted in the metropolis.
The 24-year-old designer created three pieces as his entry to the recent Cebu Young Designers Quest, which had a floral theme for the design competition. He chose the carnation as his inspiration for the flower’s colors, texture and the waves of its petals. The designer calls this mini collection “Purita,” a name taken from the word “purity.”
“To me, this means a kind-hearted, yet strong and confident [woman],” says Jerrick of the name. His story behind Purita is a barrio girl gone to “the concrete jungle, striving to find herself in an urban setting.” In trying to adjust to a different kind of wilderness, she transformed into a strong, confident and high-fashion urban woman.

The designer translated his inspiration into a long gown, a jumpsuit and a cocktail dress. Each piece in the lineup juxtaposes the complexity and the softness of the carnation. Jerrick says he is a fan of great theatrics and couture and wanted plenty of texture. He used bias-cut cocoon fabric strips dyed purple and green, carefully hand-sewn to create specific folds and flow. Soft tulle and Georgette fabric lining add to the delicate feel of the garments.
With the long gown, it is as though a carnation is enveloping and blooming out from the body. Petals appear to be growing wildly from Purita herself and falling gently down the length of the dress. The short cocktail dress is a delicate piece in all white with an illusion neckline, and is intricate at the same time with its dense folds. The jumpsuit in shades of apple green and mint green features a deep V neckline and light fabric for the pants, for an almost fairy-like feel.
Each piece blends well with nature as its background, but would look just as appropriate at a black tie event at a posh hotel in the city. (Sun.Star Cebu)
