October 2013 marks the first ever Hawaii Fashion Month, stitched together by Hawaii Fashion Incubator and the state of Hawaii. From October 1 to 30, there’s nearly an event a day, from glitzy fashion shows and can’t-miss parties to shopping events, exhibitions and a giant trade show, all designed to grow the local fashion industry and showcase our state’s ever expanding talent pool. So get ready to mark your calendars, or better yet, just plan for a full blackout.
From the classrooms of Honolulu Community College, to the semi-finals of Project Runway, to the floors of Neiman Marcus, Ari Southiphong’s success as a local designer is one of the reasons Hawaii Fashion Month exists. “I’m excited for this, it’s the first initiative to really, really promote our industry,” says Southiphong. “It definitely strengthens my ability to succeed here as a fashion designer.”
Southiphong's new Andy South collection for Neiman Marcus debuts this month at an in-store trunk show on the 18th. Taking the downtown-edgy feel of her first collection and mixing it with refined construction, the designer feels that this F/W collection is her best yet—she even designed sleek, leather accessories to match. A few of the highlights include a cropped tuxedo-influenced blazer, a polished asymmetrical pencil skirt and a curve-defining dress done in steel gray and panther black, embellished with luxe Swarovski crystal fabric. But our fave (at right) is the cocktail dress with a low V-neck, enhanced by supple, mixed-leather panels. It’s simple-yet-sexy with a hint of southern charm.
