GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- This weekend, the Flint Horror Con will serve up costume contests, celebrity guests, vendors, and films to horror fans from around the state in downtown Flint. That same evening, three comedians who have appeared in films, TV shows, and tours around the country will perform at The Whiting, and the next night, a musician who has sold millions of records will play at The Machine Shop. Read below for more information on this weekend's things to do.


Flint Horror Convention – Saturday, Oct. 19


The Flint Horror Convention will bring costume contests, vendors, celebrity guests, and horror films to its third annual event on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Masonic Temple, 755 S. Saginaw St., from noon to 9 p.m. The convention will use three floors of the building. Admission for the convention is $10.


One floor will have screenings of nine hours' worth of horror movies, some of them filmed in Holly, Flint and Detroit, and as far away as France and Spain. The two other floors will be used to host vendors selling a variety of items like books, films, art, posters, toys and more.


Headlining celebrity guests include John Amplas (who starred in "Martin" and played in "Day of the Dead"), Debbie Rochon (an actress who appeared in "Tromeo & Juliet"), Mike Mundy (an actor from the AMC series "The Walking Dead"), Tom Sullivan ("The Evil Dead"), and paranormal lecturer John E.L. Tenney. The guests will have sessions where they speak to attendees about their experiences working on the films or in their fields. This year will also include the new Petrifying Pin-Up contest, a combination of a pin-up contest and a costume contest in which participants dress as some of their favorite female horror characters. The winner will be crowned the "bride of Flint."


Momtourage – Saturday, Oct. 19


On Saturday, Oct .19, The Whiting will present "Momtourage" -- a night that features comediennes Caroline Rhea, Carol Leifer and Kym Whitley. Tickets for the show, which begins at 8 p.m., range from $19 to $45. The Whiting also has a "Girl's Night Out Dinner Package" available, that includes preferred seating, dinner at Fandangles' and a pre-show drink and dessert. Bret Michaels Life Rocks Tour – Sunday, Oct. 20


Solo rock musician, Poison frontman and reality TV star Bret Michaels will perform in the Life Rocks Tour at The Machine Shop at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Special guests for the concert are Monkey Grinder and Ironsnake. Tickets for the concert are $35 in advance, and are available online at TheMachineShop.info.


Dave Bennett and Combo jazz concert – Friday, Oct. 18


Michigan clarinetist Dave Bennett will perform at the Flint Institute of Arts' Isabel Hall at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, as a prelude to his sold-out concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in November. The show is a benefit concert, sponsored by the Founder's Society. Tickets for the concert are $35, and seating is limited. For reservations, call 810-237-7321.


University of Michigan-Flint Voice Faculty Recital - Friday, Oct. 18


University of Michigan-Flint will host a Voice Faculty Recital with soprano Julie Anne Carr, tenor Joshua May, pianist Frank Pitts, flutist Colton Sayre, and cellist Judy VanderWag at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 in room 164 in the campus' French Hall. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
