Local brides-to-be who love a good flash wedding dress sale, hold on to your veils.
Vows Bridal Outlet in Watertown, which is currently the filming location for TLC's series "I Found the Gown," will hold a gown rush sale event this weekend at their Galen Street store.
The event, which organizers described as similar to the popular "Running of the Brides" made popular by Filene's Basement, will feature hundreds of gowns at steeply discounted prices. Designer dresses that would normally run $1,000 to $7,000 will cost between $49 and $999 during the Sunday event, organizers said. Any fiancee who finds a gold coin in her dress will take the garment home for free.
Additionally, the event - which takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. - will be filmed for TLC.
Sunday's event puts a cap on how many people should be in each party - three, maximum - and notes that the gowns are sold are first come, first served. Storeowners urge women to arrive early for the best dresses. Anyone participating should expect to try on gowns in open or shared dressing rooms.
TLC's "I Found the Gown," which began airing last summer and uses Vows as its main filming location, is now in its third season. The new series differs from many of the networks’ other staple shows – such as “Say Yes to the Dress” – in that it acknowledges many brides lack the budget necessary to find, and fund, a dream designer wedding gown.
“TLC has a lot of shows about different types of matrimony milestones, and finding a dress is really important,” said Niki Kazakos, a TLC spokeswoman. “On ‘I Found the Gown,’ it’s really about the discount that brides are getting.”
Each half-hour episode follows three brides-to-be as they meet with Vows consultants to find their dream dress.
Owners and married couple Rick and Leslie DeAngelo are able to offer upscale designer names at low prices because they buy their inventory wholesale at cheaper prices.
While the DeAngelos said some gowns are in perfect condition, simply overstocked from designers or bought from other businesses closing down, some dresses were previously worn down the runway or served as samples. The store also might only have specific sizes in certain styles.
