She's had a controversial few weeks following the airing of the scandalous Downton Abbey rape scene.

But Joanne Froggatt put the drama surrounding the episode behind her to make a stunning appearance at the BFI London Film Festival Awards on Saturday night.

The 33-year-old wowed in a chic black and moss green tea-length dress, which flattered her petite figure.

Joanne finished off her look with embellished black heels, a black clutch bag, silver hoop-style earrings and a large silver ring.

On the make-up front, Joanne opted for a smoky eye and nude lip, while leaving her blonde hair loose and gently tousled.

Despite the rape scene which aired earlier this month hitting headlines for all the wrong reasons, Joanne later insisted she is more than proud of the controversial twist, which saw her character Anna Bates being dragged off by valet Mr. Green after resisting his advances.

Joanne said: 'I was really proud of the show for tackling a subject like this. It's a really brave thing to do and I really do believe that Julian Fellowes has written that in a way that is not gratuitous at all, he does very much go on to explore the emotional journey of Anna.

'He's done a beautiful job of hitting the right note with it. I think we all just felt a big responsibility to get it right.'

Julian, the series' creator, also defended his decision to include the rape, which was not shown on-screen, saying although it was shocking, it was handled with care.

He added: 'The whole point of the way we do things on Downton is we don't do them gratuitously.

'If we'd wanted a sensational rape we could have stayed down in the kitchen with the camera during the whole thing and wrung it out.'

Joanne wasn't the only star to make a glamorous appearance for the BFI Awards at Banqueting House.
