Rating: *** 1/2 Inspired by the 19th century fable, “The Snow Queen” by Hans Christian Andersen, this animated musical may be excessively sweet but it doesn’t induce the fatigue factor at all.
When it comes to narrating a good old fairy tale, Disney continues to rock. Besides the gorgeous visuals, Frozen is appealing also because of its catchy songs. In fact, if the film wasn’t peppered with musical set pieces, it could have collapsed on its pretty face.
Imaginatively conceived and executed, the numbers “For the First time in Forever” and “In Summer” are particularly well-done. The subject is sisterhood. A pair of orphaned princesses has grown apart since the death of their parents.
The older one (voiced by Menzel), possessed of powers of sorcery has turned their kingdom into a snowy expanse. Trapped in a castle for eternity, she’s sought to be rescued by her younger sibling (Bell).
Optimistic and perky, she’s accompanied by a giant mountain man, his loyal reindeer and an adorable snowman who yearns for summer. For once, the sisters aren’t merely round-eyed marionettes but are given a feisty, independent spirit.
The little twists and turns in the plot are either charming or thrilling – unlike most movies for adolescent viewers today which are too violent and gory for comfort. Upholding family values, without getting preach, Frozen is enjoyed best with kids.
