A Venezuelan beauty who promotes trash collection and clean water was crowned 2013 Miss Earth during a televised pageant held in Alabang, Muntinlupa Saturday night.
Alyz Henrich, 22, bested 87 other delegates in the 13th edition of the environment-driven beauty contest that also promoted the best of Philippine eco-tourism.
Asked about her environmental advocacy, Henrich said: “I will be working for the collection of trash in the Los Roques Island chain, supporting the cause directed by a brilliant 12-year-old kid, who began to keep the waters of these islands clean. Taking care of our water is taking care of ourselves, water is life. Let’s keep it clean.”
Henrich stands 176 centimeters and measures 35-23-36. She was born in a small town called Los Taques at the Peninsula de Paraguana the state of Falcon in Venezuela. Henrich also says that she cherishes her family a lot.
Other winners were Miss Earth Air Miss Korea Catharina Choi, Miss Earth Water Miss Thailand Punika Kulsoontornrut; and Miss Earth Fire Miss Austria Katia Wagner.
Miss Philippines Angelee delos Reyes, of Olongapo City, made the Top 8 semi-finalists. Other candidates who made the Top 16 were representatives from Turkey, Chile, France, China, Mauritius, Spain, USA, and South Africa. From Top 16, the Top 8 candidates were chosen — Miss Poland, Miss Philippines, Miss Serbia, Miss Venezuela, Miss Korea, Miss Thailand, and Miss Austria. Then the winners were chosen after the final Question and Answer.
Other winners of major special awards include Miss India Sobhita Dhulipala, Miss Photogenic (online competition), Miss Earth Eco-Beauty (online competition) and Miss Ever Bilena; Miss Venezuela Alyz Henrich, Best in Evening Gown; Miss Ukraine Anastasia Sukh, Best In Swimsuit; Miss Kazakhstan Kumis Bazarbaueva, Best In Talent; Miss Thailand Punika Kulsoontornrut, Best In Resorts Wear; and Miss Gabon Filiane Koundi, Miss Lebanon Rita Hoykayem, and Miss Indonesia Nita Sofiani, Miss Ever Bilena. Corporate awards were also presented to other candidates during pre-pageant presentation.
During their three-week stay in the Philippines, the candidates also helped in the relief operations for victims of super typhoon Yolanda.
