If life were like “Downton Abbey,” the 1% would be able to live quite comfortably off the work of the 99%.


Wait a minute, that is real life.


But class distinctions aren’t the heart of this dazzling piece of PBS “Masterpiece” escapism. It’s the finely drawn characters and all their hopes and flaws that have viewers eagerly awaiting the start of Season 4 at 9 tonight on WTVS (Channel 56).


As the action picks up again, Lady Mary is still reeling six months after the unexpected death of her husband, Matthew. New suitors are on the horizon this season, as are new developments for unlucky-in-love Lady Edith, and the arrival of a new relative from America played by Paul Giamatti. But the dowager Countess of Grantham’s crabby mood is totally unchanged, thank goodness.
