Hats off, or in this case, wigs off, to Miley Cyrus for setting the Halloween costume bar high by paying homage to Lil Kim's infamously sexy 1999 Video Music Awards ensemble.

Cyrus, who admitted to Billboard that not only is Lil Kim one of her favorite artists, but "on the inside" she sees herself as a replica of the female MC. And when Cyrus donned the sequined outfit, a bright purple wig and a strategically placed purple pasty, the look that was so spot-on that the rapper herself gave her seal of approval.

The Queen Bee is of course referencing the moment where Diana Ross tapped Lil Kim's left breast when they presented onstage together -- a moment Kim relived with MTV News before the VMAs took over her hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

"I think I was more of like a friendly, 'Oh my god, you look sexy girl, but do you know you have a boob hanging out?'" Kim said of the lift seen-round-the-world. "By the way, if I ever did a movie of my life I would get her to play my mom."
Back in 1999, Lil Kim had jaws on the floor at New York's Lincoln Center when she hit the carpet, proving to everyone that the VMAs were not only the place to get noticed, but to take some major risks with your fashion.
"I was like, 'Yeah I'll wear that,'" Lil Kim told MTV "House of Style" host Rebecca Romijn about her look in 1999.
"My stylist, her name is Misa [Hylton-Brim] she's actually here today she's standing over there she has a cowboy hat. I have a hair stylist who gets these beautiful wigs made sometimes she gets them imported from overseas and my shoes are by Steve Madden."
