Don't blame Kendrick Lamar for the recent hiccups plaguing Kanye West's Yeezus Tour. The good kid from Compton is just as disappointed as all of the mad cities — Vancouver, Denver, Minneapolis, Anaheim and now Chicago — that have had shows postponed at the last minute because of damaged equipment and production logistics.
"I was looking forward to them cities man," Kendrick told MTV News on Saturday backstage at Power 105.1's annual Powerhouse concert in Brooklyn . The Tour was scheduled to hit Chicago November 7 and 9. "Now we gotta wait and sit back but I'll go in the studio and put that energy into the booth. But I definitely was looking forward to them cities. Hopefully, we get back on as soon as possible."
"First off, just being a fan of his work and actually going on tour with him, that's just a whole 'nother world," Kendrick said of his experience with Yeezus thus far. "Second, watching him perform and seeing how much he put into his presence onstage, it just reassures me that coming out the booth, you gotta take just as much attention on that stage, and put work in on that. "
Last week, a vehicle containing stage equipment bound for Vancouver was involved in an accident, damaging gear crucial to the show's elaborate set design beyond repair. "On the road to Vancouver, a truck carrying The Yeezus Tour's custom-made video truss and 60-ft circular LED screen was in an accident that damaged the gear beyond repair Def Jam said in a statement last week.
"This gear is central to the staging of The Yeezus Tour, and central to the creative vision put forth by Kanye West and his design team at DONDA. As a result of this event, it is impossible to put on the show and The Yeezus Tour will be postponed until these essential pieces can be reengineered and refabricated. Kanye West will not compromise on bringing the show, as it was originally envisioned and designed, to his fans. The Vancouver, Denver and Minneapolis dates have been postponed. Further details on the affected tour dates will be announced shortly."
Tour setbacks notwithstanding, K.Dot has relished the opportunity to open for the "I Am A God" MC in front of thousands of fans, while also learning the importance of stage presence from hip-hop's most imaginative and bombastic artist.
"It's a great experience, man and I'm happy, I'm excited. It's a blessing for sure."
