Madonna may be quite a bit older than her pop star rivals, but she also commands a much larger salary. The Material Girl earned $125 million over the past year, making her the highest-paid musician of 2013, according to Forbes.
In addition, last spring the singer, 55, became a part of an elite group of people whose bank balances surpass a staggering $1 billion. Now that's rich.
Madonna's record breaking "MDNA" world tour grossed more than $305 million in 2012. She also earned $75 million from concert merchandise and $10 million from TV rights and DVD sales.
Investments in her Hard Candy gym franchise and coconut health drink Vito Coco, as well as a $10 million deal with Smirnoff vodka, increased her fortune. Her "Truth or Dare" perfume has earned $60 million in sales, while her Material Girl clothing and accessories line is expected to draw another $10 million this year.
Madonna's closest rival on the list is Lady Gaga, who earned $80 million over the past year. Gaga has been accused of copying the older singer, sparked by her 2011 single "Born This Way," which includes similarities to Madonna's "Express Yourself."
In response to the comparisons, last month Gaga tweeted a link to a 2012 interview in which Madonna described her songs as "reductive," writing: "MADONNA HATES GAGA SHE'S OVER. I don't need anybody's permission to be remembered. I will be. Whether they like it or not."
