Miley Cyrus has made it abundantly clear this year that she has no use for society's rules. Whether they apply to the proper use of foam fingers, the wearing of pants and full-length tops, the licking of hammers or the lighting up of possibly tobacco-less cigarettes onstage at Sunday night's 2013 MTV EMA? awards show.

Only Miley knows what was in that smoke she pulled out of her purse while accepting the Best Video award for "Wrecking Ball." And time will tell if she'll get fined for lighting up indoors in not-as-liberal-as-you-might-think? Amsterdam, but one thing we do know is that she joins a long and storied list of artists who've refused to play by the rules on the stage.

Some other memorable stage rebels:

Madonna

Madonna's global MDNA tour juggernaut caused endless headaches in 2012 when the veteran provocateur was criticized for her not-so-subtle jab at Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," as well the singer's brandishing of fake firearms, sue of violent imagery and liberal flashing of her breasts and butt during shows.

Odd Future

Odd Future are fellow purveyors of stage chaos, which over the past few years has included everything from Left Brain allegedly punching a photographer? at the Voodoo Music Experience festival to claims by a fan at one of their 2012 shows that he got a beatdown when he tried to join them on stage.

Akon

Akon knows about that kind of trouble, as he plead guilty in 2008 to tossing a fan off the stage? at a show in 2007. That same year the singer was fired from his deal with Verizon after a video surfaced of him aggressively grinding on a 15-year-old fan during a concert in Trinidad.

Kanye West

Kanye West famously bum-rushed Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs
, but more recently, the rapper has been killing time during his live shows with rambling rants
that take on everything from major corporations to the fashion industry.

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg, (cough) like every single day.

Miley Cyrus

Miley, (again), duh, at the 2013 VMAs
.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was not able to keep her anger in check during a tour of Russia in 2012, when she reportedly spoke out in support of gay rights onstage. Both she and Madonna were reportedly investigated in the wake of their comments about gay rights for allegedly coming to the country with the wrong visas.
