The million dollar swimsuit worn by the newly crowned Miss Universe[1] , Gabriela Isler of Venezuela[2] , is a jewel-studded get-up valued at $1 million. While no one would dare take the swimming costume into the water, and the design certainly is stunning, it’s not the practicality of the swimsuit that some are questioning, it’s the inflated price tag.

AFP via Yahoo! News[3] today shared Miss Venezuela’s win on Sunday and the 25-year-old’s reaction to claiming the title of Miss Universe. Isler competed with 85 other women representing their countries.

“I feel very happy to share my first day as Miss Universe,” Isler said at an after-show party in Moscow. “I'm a simple girl. I am just come to have fun, to enjoy the moment – and here I am.”

“Isler wowed the judges including Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler with her appearances in a bikini and sparkly silver evening dress,” says Yahoo.

In the interview round, she was asked what her greatest fear was. Her response was a safe one; she simply offered: “We should overcome all our fears and this in turn will make us much stronger.”

Isler’s cut-away swimming costume was made with over 900 precious stones – emerald pendants and swirls of diamonds and rubies – but was described by Miss Universe as “simple.”

“It's very simple but very elegant, so it's like me,” Isler said.

“We do have armed guards, so don't get any ideas,” quipped Paula Shugart, President of the Miss Universe organization.

Some are questioning however the enormous expense of the swimsuit, especially in light of the poverty facing Venezuela and the plight of thousands of those in the Philippines who have lost homes and loved ones in this past week’s raging typhoon.

A sampling of the posts on Yahoo’s article:

“So useless, these contests… what values do they pass on to young girls? Look at what a million dollars could do for say, Philippine victims.”

“Proof positive that a million dollars cannot buy you taste or class. That is one tacky suit. It looks like something you would buy from a Frederick's of Hollywood catalog.”

“Why does someone who has known a lifestyle of wealth and indulging, with a bathing suit of this cost, have to win this kind of competition? How can someone of this category know of the world’s needs?”

“Maybe they could auction the bikini and donate the proceeds to the victim of the typhoon in the Philippines?”

“When the first thing I hear about ‘Miss Universe’ is that she wore a $1M bathing suit, makes me hate this individual right off the bat and tells me that she is self absorbed, selfish and doesn’t care about the universe at all… This title is a bunch of BS anyway, and someone who devotes their life to being some made up Miss Universe, basically so they can worship themselves, is a worthless person anyway.”
