The new trailer for the "RoboCop" remake finally addresses a question that has long plagued science fiction for too long. "Why is America so robo-phobic?" asks Samuel L. Jackson as futuristic TV personality Pat Novak.
While the first trailer focused on Officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman from "The Killing"), the man who becomes part-machine, the newest preview shines more light on the world that made him that way.
The United States has grown stronger than ever, thanks to advancements in robotics technologies. Military forces patrol the streets of a Middle Eastern country in the beginning of the trailer, assessing even children for potential threats.
A longer version of the scene screened at San Diego Comic-Con, and in it, these machines malfunction in a way that causes concern about potential safety hazards if they were to be used in Amercia.
That's where Michael Keaton as an OmniCorp higher-up conceives the idea of a man within a machine.
We are once again treated to RoboCop's origin story. After a nice night spent with his family, Murphy goes outside to investigate a car alarm — only to get blown up. From there, we see a bunch of RoboCop action, including a field test of his new body against a host of robots and a climactic fight against the ED-209, the giant biped killer that we see earlier in the trailer.
"RoboCop" doesn't just slap a recognizable name onto any old sci-fi action movie. The cast of the remake, directed by José Padilha, is enough to keep even RoboCop novices interested. The film also stars Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel and Jennifer Ehle.
"RoboCop" opens in theaters on February 12.
