The holidays are almost upon us, and NBC will soon be alive with the sound of music. A trailer for the live staging of "The Sound of Music," starring country star Carrie Underwood and "True Blood" vampire Stephen Moyer, is out, and it gives fans a sneak peek at rehearsals for the TV event.
In NBC's version of the cinematic holiday staple, Underwood will tackle the iconic role of aspiring nun turned caregiver Maria, who leaves the convent behind to live with the von Trapp family as their nanny. Moyer will play their patriarch, the stoic war hero Captain von Trapp, who has seven kids with no shortage of energy.
"Nobody does stuff like this for one night," Underwood says about the production in the sneak peek, later singing the classic track "My Favorite Things" as well as the musical's title number. "The talent is off the charts. These people are amazing."
This version of the story is based on the 1959 Broadway production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's classic musical, which featured Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. But fans might be most familiar with the tale of Maria and the von Trapps from the 1965 Oscar-winning movie version starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
The broadcast will also boast performances from Broadway vets Audra McDonald (Mother Abbess), Laura Benanti (Elsa Schrader) and Christian Borle (Max Dettweiler). The cast of children includes Ariane Rinehart (Liesl), Michael Nigro (Fredrich), Ella Watts-Gorman (Louisa), Joe West (Kurt), Sophia Caruso (Brigitta), Grace Rundhaug (Marta) and Peyton Ella (Gretl). The three-hour broadcast, billed as "The Sound of Music Live!" will go live at 8 p.m. ET/PT December 5.
