What if you kept waking up only to fight the same (losing) alien war over and over again? What if you had to fight those battles in an Elysium-type exosuit in battles that look like Call of Duty? That’s the premise of the latest Tom Cruise future dystopia flick Edge of Tomorrow, and the latest trailer for the flick makes it look pretty awesome.
In Edge of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise, looking scared and heroic as ever) finds himself killed in what is essentially a suicide mission during an alien war. From that point forward – for reasons unknown – he goes into a time-loop that forces him to relive the battle again and again, Groundhog Day-style. Eventually he finds a special forces soldier named Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who implores him to “come find me when you wake up” and the two, according to the film’s synopsis, “take the fight to the aliens,” getting closer and closer to victory with each repeated battle. Alien battles, mysterious time-loops and gritty sci-fi action? OK, that sounds like fun, especially if it’s got Blunt playing someone this badass.
Added bonus: The movie already has a hashtag, #LiveDieRepeat. Think of it as the anti-#YOLO. Edge of Tomorrow hits theaters June 6, 2014.
