Beyonce may have unseated Kim Kardashian as the most-searched celebrity of 2013 on Bing, but the arrival of North West kept the reality starlet top of mind for Ask.com users.
More than 100 million monthly users visited Ask for answers this year, and many had babies on their mind, the company revealed Monday. The top trending questions of 2013 in both the celebrity and overall news categories were baby-related.
When it came to celebrities, Ask visitors most often wanted to know "Why is Kim and Kanye's baby named North West?" while the most commonly-asked news-related question was "What is the Royal Baby's name?"
Amanda Bynes and Miley Cyrus also made the list of the top-searched celebrities of 2013, according to both Ask and Bing. "What did Miley Cyrus do at the VMAs?" was the second most-searched celebrity query on Ask, followed by "How did Cory Monteith die?" and "What did Paula Deen say?" Others wanted to know "Why was Amanda Bynes arrested?" and "Is Lamar Odom on drugs?"
"People turn to Ask for answers on everything from noteworthy celebrities to breaking news to political pundits," Valerie Combs, vice president of communications for Ask.com, said in a statement. "Given we get a significant volume of queries in the form of a natural language question, we can take a unique look at the storylines and trends that captured American attention this year."
As for general news, the Boston Marathon, Syria, and the devastating typhoon which hit the Philippines had users asking questions. "Where was the Boston Marathon bomber found?" was the No. 2 searched news-related question on Ask, followed by "Will the U.S. invade Syria?" and "How can I help victims of the Philippines typhoon?" Others commonly questioned why George Zimmerman was acquitted, the identity of the Navy Yard shooter, and whether Oscar Pistorius killed his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, when it came to politics, Ask users were scratching their heads in 2013 to find out why the government shut down, where Edward Snowden was hiding, and whether Prop 8 was thrown out.
