In a stark admission to the Hollywood Reporter , Winfrey revealed that if she had decided to have kids they would have taken a back seat to the empire she has built over the past decades.

"If I had kids, my kids would hate me," she told the magazine.

"They would have ended up on the equivalent of the 'Oprah' show talking about me; because something would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them."

The billionaire media mogul said the she has never been interested in having children of her own despite opening the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

She has invested $100 million into the school and revealed in the interview that she communicates with the girls at the school every morning.

But while best friend Gayle King was dreaming up plans for a family when they went to school together, Winfrey had grander plans.

"Gayle was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade Home Ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children," she said.

"While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King."

Oprah said she was planning to cut back on the crazy schedule she keeps that saw her away from home 235 days in 2012.

Part of the plan is to make the move from Chicago to California where she is putting the finishing touches on a new home that is rumoured to have cost more than $90 million.
