A Turkish fashion label has been awarded the Jameel Prize for artists and designers inspired by Islamic traditions. Dice Kayek is run by two sisters, Ece and Ayşe Ege, who are based in Istanbul and Paris. They submitted three dresses inspired by the robes of Ottoman rulers, Byzantine mosaics and the domes of Istanbul’s mosques and palaces.
The £25,000 prize was presented Tuesday evening, 10 December, at a ceremony held at London’s Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum, by Fady Jameel. He is president of Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives, set up by the Saudi Arabian family that runs a car sales and distribution business.
Martin Roth, the V&A’s director who led the prize judges, says that they were “struck by the way that Dice Kayak’s work uses Islamic inspiration in a completely secular context, taking it into a new world—that of contemporary fashion”. An exhibition of the ten shortlisted artists runs at the V&A until 21 April.
