When you start watching awards contender American Hustle—out today (December 13)—you will notice Amy Adams speaking with a not-so-good British accent, a deliberate act on her part.

Adams stars opposite Christian Bale—they play 1970s con-artists in this much-praised movie—which also includes Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in its cast. The film is set in New York and New Jersey and is directed by David O. Russell.

Adams’ character Sydney Prosser affects a British accent to help give the impression that she has good London banking credentials to those poor individuals she’s trying to con.

“It is a fake British accent,” says Adams. “I think she liked to watch films and she probably watched a lot of interviews and styled herself to be quite posh in her mind.”

The actress gives a strong performance. Her character is sociopathic and quite dark, and it’s brought talk of awards recognition with a trophy going her way.

She says: “I’d rather my daughter win a trophy for like dance, bowling, you know… I’m not gonna, throw it away if I win it, but it’s just nice to be able to be offered the jobs that earn that kind of conversation.”
