In case you hadn’t noticed, the Kardashians are really good at family things (dinners, vacations, feuds, more vacations), so it only makes sense that every year the family cranks out one hell of a Christmas card. As family fame has spiraled to outlandish heights, so too has the scale and style of their holiday portraits — David LaChapelle shot this year’s holiday surprise. Here, a look back at the last four years of yuletide Kardashian.

2013: A Kardashian Karnivale

On Sunday’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians: A Very Merry Christmas” special on E!, the crew got together to sip champagne, open presents and regale each other with tales of Christmases past before vamping it for famed photographer David LaChapelle, whose taste for celebrity, kitsch and Photoshop couldn’t be more on par with the Kardashians.

“I like taking higher art and mixing it up with pop culture,” LaChapelle explained to the ladies on Sunday night’s episode, concluding that it should be the women, “the matriarchs,” dominating the shot.

And indeed, as if to save retouchers the trouble when relationships go kaput next season, conspicuously absent were Kanye West (Kim’s fiancé and “Bound 2” partner-in-crime), Lamar Odom (Khloe’s estranged, druggy husband), Scott Disick (Kourtney’s boyfriend and baby daddy), and all the Kardashian-Jenner brothers. Bruce Jenner, who recently split from Kris, secured his spot by — um — a hair, but got shafted, literally and befittingly, in a cryogenics tube. There is no manger and no sign of Kimye baby North West, either.

According to E!, the look is “high-fashion” and “carnival-like,” meaning all-black attire, with family members immersed in an apocalyptic mess of mangled mannequins, tabloid debris and flashy lights. It may be too wide to stuff in a letter-size envelope, but hey, pictures are always better with a little bit of commentary.

2012: Winter White

The Kardashians were dreaming of a certain kind of Christmas last year as the family (dudes included) went pure glam in all-white ensembles, which were actually entirely on-trend. Kourtney and Scott showed off their latest addition, Penelope, confetti fell from the sky, and yes, that is a cat in the box.

2011: Going Glam

It was a black-tie affair two years ago, when the family went tux luxe for their card, lensed by Nick Saglimbeni, a family favorite. The men look uniform and make fine accessories for the ladies, serving sequins and pseudo-editorial drama. The scene is striking, but comes off less cinematic and more like a perfume ad. For this they even sent out a special 3-D version of the card, so maybe it was scratch-’n’-sniff, too.

2010: Dynasty

A Kardashian family classic. Kris and the gang regularly reach all the histrionics of an ’80s soap opera, so why not play the part for the holidays? As per usual, Kim stole the show in a strategically slit white Emilio Pucci gown, while the rest of the family stuck to a more muted palette with prom-inspired detail. They all got on board with serious faces, which only they are taking seriously.
