With theme of unity, Walsh takes over as Boston's mayor - Boston Globe

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Martin Joseph Walsh, the son of Irish immigrants who grew up in a Dorchester three-decker and rose to prominence through the labor movement, took the oath of office Monday as Boston’s 48th mayor, vowing a new era of progress and collaboration. In an inauguration infused with Celtic tradition, Walsh alluded to his own biography as he described Boston as a city of big dreams, second chances, and redemption. Speaking to a crowd of 8,000 at a Boston College sports arena, Walsh traced the arc of the city’s history, noting its people have fought tyranny, stood up to slavery, opened doors to immigrants, and led the nation in recognizing same-sex marriage. Walsh, 46, made nuts-and-bolts pledges to improve city schools, reduce crime, and overhaul the city’s development process. But in essence, he made three simple promises. “I will listen. I will learn. I will lead,” he said. The promise to listen served as the theme of his 26-minute inaugural address. Since Election Day, Walsh has held forums and town hall meetings where thousands of people have shared ideas for the new administration. Other suggestions have come through letters, e-mails, and phone calls. “You are making your voices heard,” Walsh said. “I am listening, and I always will.” The buoyant ceremony, which contrasted with the gloomy, rain-soaked day outside, marked a distinct turning point in Boston history. Former mayor Thomas M. Menino bade farewell to the office he has held since 1993. “I’ve had a great 20 years,” Menino said before leaving his home in Readville. After an emotional ceremony with staff at City Hall, Menino left Walsh a note and a set of four keys on the desk in the fifth-floor mayor’s office. Hours later, Walsh was in City Hall, but had yet to read the letter from Menino. “I haven’t opened it yet because too many people were in the office, I walked in the office and my mother was sitting in the chair” behind the desk, Walsh said, adding, “I’m not sure where the keys lead to.” Menino and Walsh spoke by phone Sunday night, but the two did not cross paths Monday as power officially shifted. Menino did not attend Walsh’s inauguration, and Walsh declined Menino’s invitation for a morning meeting at City Hall. It was a day of change on other fronts. The City Council elected Councilor Bill Linehan its president by a vote of 8-to-5 after a last-minute challenge by Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley. The 13-member body also welcomed three new councilors — Timothy McCarthy, Michelle Wu, and Josh Zakim — and one returning member, Michael F. Flaherty, who had served previously. But the day belonged to Walsh. Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley and other clergy prayed for the new mayor. Walsh was serenaded by Irish tenor Ronan Tynan and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who played strains of “Danny Boy.” Mel King, the only person of color in Boston to advance to a final election for mayor, wore a bow tie and dark blue overalls as he led students in song. Senator Elizabeth Warren told the crowd at Conte Forum she was optimistic about the future because “we have a new mayor who will truly be a mayor for all of Boston.” Governor Deval Patrick offered good-natured advice, reminding Walsh to remain grounded and not let the trappings of higher office go to his head. “The day of my first inauguration, like the day of my wedding, is a blur,” Patrick said, warning Walsh that he “won’t remember precisely the moment your jokes became so funny, you became so photogenic, and you had to have an opinion on absolutely everything.” Walsh blushed on stage as he sat between his girlfriend, Lorrie Higgins, and his mother, Mary J. O’Malley Walsh, who clutched the Bible in her lap that her son used for the oath of office. In his speech, Walsh alluded to his struggle with alcoholism and improbable rise to the city’s highest office. “We are a city of big dreams, and we have what it takes to make dreams come true,” Walsh said. “And if you doubt any of that, look at this kid from Taft Street in Dorchester who’s now your mayor. I know my mother’s not the only one surprised.” He noted the broad coalition that propelled him into office and vowed to carry that momentum into City Hall. “Today, we are sworn in together,” Walsh said. “Together, we are committing to do all we can for the city we love. Together, we can move our great city forward.” The new mayor pledged to reduce crime and in his first act at City Hall held a meeting to begin to address urban violence. The meeting, which was closed to the press, included Interim Police Commissioner William B. Evans, Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins, and members of Mothers For Justice and Equality. “Mayor Walsh has assured us that there is going to be a change of culture,” said Kim Odom, whose 13-year-old son Steven was shot and killed in 2007. “It’s not going to be just talk, that there’s going to be action.” Walsh also vowed to restructure the Boston Redevelopment Authority, create a city Ethics Committee, and set “tough new ethics standards” for his staff, which will include more detailed annual financial disclosures. He said he would launch a nationwide search for a new school superintendent and address problems faced by senior citizens. Many in the crowd seemed less interested in policy implications of the speech and more focused on the character of the new mayor. “He knows where he came from,” said Guilandre Dubuisson of Canton, who wore an elegant evening dress. Dubuisson was impressed that Walsh alluded to the troubles in his own life and that he was able to “become a new person.” “I like his pitch, to tell you the truth,” she said. “Sometimes you think you’re the only troubled one.” State Representative Russell E. Holmes of Boston said the day marked the dawn of a new era for city politicians who came of age under Menino. An inaugural recipient of the 2013 Light of Hope — Former Foster Care Legacy Award, Dechant, whose mother was sent to prison when she was only 6 years old, and whose father died when she was 4, is a winning product out of the state foster care system. “On a daily basis, I have so much to be grateful for,” Dechant said. “There are so many people who have uplifted me, and helped me reach my potential.” Now a college graduate, and a legislative assistant in Austin, Dechant, 24, was born in Humble, and lived with a foster family in Kingwood for a time, before being sent off to live with an aunt in Orange County, Calif. Things quickly soured and CPS case workers in California were forced to remove Brigette from her aunt’s home. She was sent to live in Austin where she began to thrive, starting, and later graduating from Austin High School. Dechant earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas State. Right out of college she landed a sought-after job as a legislative assistant with Texas Star Alliance in Austin. The first day on the job at Texas Star Alliance, Dechant was tapped to be the liaison between her new employer and an organization dedicated to foster children, she said. “I think God is working right now before our eyes,” Dechant said. Mentors, including Janet (Thompson) Randolph, Addrianna Alura and Chad Pantella, were just some of the dedicated caregivers who believed in her. “These were people who saw me through tough times, and still looked at me and thought: ‘We just know she will become something,’” Dechant said. And before the coconuts are thrown, let's just say we hope the juice is drunk first, otherwise that would be an unnecessary waste, and besides, much heavier to lift and hurl. This year was a big year for great new Phuket resorts. There were some wonderful places to stay among the dazzling new units around Phuket's coast. We didn't get to stay at any of them, just walk around on a tour and shake our heads at the superb vistas and note how many of them are to a very high standard. That means our judgement is based on look and feel, not on service. We also have to apologise to a couple of great resorts we toured but did not get the chance to review because the busy first half of 2013 turned into an extremely hectic second half. Design standards are improving and we wonder what the coming years will bring as some of the older Phuket resorts in the best locations are remade to use modern techniques that seem to take the classics and make them cool and hip. And (please excuse us while we duck under a coconut) we're well aware of the checkered history of the location. We are not supporters of national park encroachment or any illegal activity. The jury is still out, the resort is built and open, and our thoughts are purely based on the quality of the completed product. It's also worth saying - without making a judgement on innocent or guilt (there goes another coconut) - that many resorts on Phuket and around the region have interesting pasts. What does it for us about the Pullman? The ascent to the entrance is a big plus. We visited during the day but it could be sensational by candlelight. To be greeted by a ''welcomer'' wearing a wafting blue evening dress also made us feel special. We know some resorts produce their entire staff to say ''Hi.'' From the perspective of a Main Line girl Christmas Vacation 1908-09 - Main Line

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div readability='80.1815426069' id='paragraphs1'>I have just been thinking my Christmas vacation over, and thought my, what a good time I had, it is a shame not to write everything down so that years afterwards I could read about what I had done instead of forgetting it entirely. I have often wished Mama or Grandma or somebody had written about what they had done, so that I could read about it, it would be so interesting! So, finding this little book, I have decided to write everything I have done from Dec. 18 to January 7, when school stopped and began: When the bell rang at 11 o’clock, Friday, December 18, a signal that school was over for three lovely weeks, you can imagine the buzz and bustle and noise of joy, excitement and gladness that filled every girls’ hearts in the Misses Shipley’s School, Bryn Mawr Pa! I was certainly one of those joyful girls, and the first thing I did was to grab Fuzzy and have a whirl. <img alt="" src="http://www.lowermerionhistory.org/photodb/full/152-2.jpg" width="100%"/>Shipley School Main School Building, Bryn Mawr (1895) (Source: Gerald A. Francis Collection) Of course we had to celebrate the occasion by marching over to Glocker’s and buying everything that looked good and was good on and off the counter. “That was the beginning”, said I, and it was from Glocker’s we would not each trudge to our own little home, and so Fran said, “You will both (meaning Fuzzy and I ) come home with me, of course.” No sooner said than done, and we all three caught the next train for Ardmore. That afternoon we spent in eating, reading Sherlock Holmes stories and in talking and planning for Christmas and vacation. One may wonder that, as Christmas was so near we did not work for it, but then, as Fuzzy pointed out one could not celebrate the end of work by working. We went home rather late that evening, I am afraid to say, but then we could not stop an exciting Sherlock Holmes story to catch an old train, so ‘twas the 6:19 at Villa Nova and the 6:22 at Radnor that our family met us at. But we had a nice time, so we were excused. Saturday morning found me “alive and kicking” and ready for more fun, which there was plenty of. Fuzzy had made Fran and I promise we would come up that morning and, if she could have us, to stay for lunch. So ‘twas to Radnor bought myself a ticket for from Miss Gleason. When we got to the Carpenters’, Eleanor said she was sorry but she could not have us to lunch that day as Elizabeth had asked Helen and Emilie Parker, and she could not have any more. We stayed till after 1 making burnt wood things for Christmas, and a few minutes after Emilie and Helen had come we left. When we had gotten off we began to wish we had gotten off in Bryn Mawr because one could get so much more and better things at Glocker’s than at an old drug store, so we walked up and down, talking and pondering how we would get to Bryn Mawr, get our lunch and get back to Ardmore on 27 cents and the last two punches on a school ticket, for we had already resolved that we would go to Glocker’s. Then I grabbed Fran’s arm and said “We must go to Glocker’s, so let’s risk going on the train back to Bryn Mawr without the conductor seeing us and taking our money, it won’t hurt to cheat the R. R. once, and we can spend our 27 cents on lunch and get back to Ardmore out your last two punches, and then you can lend me money when we get to your house to get home.” No sooner said than done, and we went over to the other side of the station and caught the next train going up. <img alt="" src="http://www.lowermerionhistory.org/photodb/full/078-2.jpg"/> Bryn Mawr Station (c.1905) (Source: Gerald A. Francis Collection) My, but we were scared when the conductor marched down the aisle, but wonder of wonders he never stopped except to glance at our innocent faces (pretending to be innocent) and we were saved! We had rather guilty consciences as we got off the train, but then as Frances said “We certainly have given the Pennsylvania Raidroad enough money on tickets to make up for 8 cents.” We went over to Glocker’s where we had a dear little 26 cent lunch. We were bound to spend our last penny so we got a stick of candy which we broke in half. It certainly had been fun, and we went back to Ardmore. From 3 to 5 we spent painting our burnt wood boxes and then had to leave. Sunday I was not feeling very well after all my exertion and things to eat, nevertheless I got up and caught the 9:49 train to Sunday school, where we had a nice surprise by the teacher telling us we were all to go over to the Fox’s to sing Christmas carols and practice them so we could sing them the Sunday after Christmas. So, all the girls, boys and children piled over to Mrs. Fox’s to “shout” carols. It was lots of fun, and, I am afraid to say, Fuzzy and I had several laughing fits right in the middle of the hymns over funny things Mr. Billy Fox said. From there we crossed the street and went to church. St Martin’s is a dear little church and I am very glad we have it to go to. Fuzzy made me promise I would come down to be at the weekly Sunday afternoon Radnor Rabble meeting at the Carpenters, but when I got home I found I had such a head ache and was so tired I could not think of going back to Radnor that afternoon, so I stayed home and rested. Monday I stayed in bed, by Mama’s instructions, all day to rest up, thereby missing a morning of pleasure at the Carpenter’s and going in the afternoon to Miss Wallace’s our Sunday school teacher where we filled our Christmas stockings for the poor and afterwards have little cups of hot chocolate. But I didn’t mind much as I knew I was going to have lots of fun afterwards. Tuesday found me in town busy with my Xmas shopping and having a busy time of it. Coming out on the train I looked like a regular Santa Claus, and felt like one for I was so happy to think Christmas was “the day after tomorrow, the day after that” as Ross had said. That evening I had a busy time directing my presents, but I certainly did enjoy it thinking the old saying was true that, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Wednesday morning I was up early with the excited thought “Now it really is the day after tomorrow with no day after that.” I went up to Fuzzy’s to finish some burnt wood presents that I was making on her machine. Fuzzy and I were so excited and it was lots of fun working together. She is such a sweet girl and I certainly do love to be with her. The little children were so cute and the way they said their pieces and acted was fine. We all walked home together through the deep snow, laden down with the things the boys had made for the Christmas tree at school. At last Christmas Eve came and my but I was busy thinking of everything for Christmas. The Carpenter’s came down in their sleigh to bring presents and to wish us a merry Xmas, and some other people came that evening. Dan, Mama, Walter and I dressed the tree. It was such fun! Our library is such a big room with such a high ceiling that we had an enormous tree, and it really did look lovely when it was all finished, but prettier still when the candles were lighted the next morning, while all of the presents were being distributed around the room on each piece of furniture which we had each claimed. I was sent off to bed, and when they filled the stockings the boys went off to bed. When I went upstairs I looked in all the children’s rooms where they were sleeping soundly, and I thought of the excitement in the morning, and I certainly did wish it was morning! I climbed in bed beside Jack my 12 year old kid brother who ever since he was a tiny fellow has slept with me on Christmas Eve night. I was soon asleep, and the next thing I knew the grandfather’s clock downstairs was striking half past 5 in the morning, Christmas morning. It is the strangest thing, every Christmas morning Jack and I wake up at exactly the same time, and this morning we both wake up together. “Emily” says Jack, “Jack” says I, and Christmas began! Putting on my wrapper and slippers and shivering in the dark and cold we lighted a candle and crept down to see what time it was. After coming back we laid in bed till after six whispering and then we said “Let’s open our stockings.” Just then Emlen and Ross came in with theirs, and we all sat up in one bed looking at the presents “Santa Claus” had brought us. It certainly was fun! My stocking was stuffed full and overflowing with lovely things, and my, but I was glad it was Christmas. Then we heard Polly laughing so we knew she was awake, so we all flew to see our precious little sister open her little stocking. She had just begun on it when we entered and her eyes were as big as saucers. After that we all got dressed and went down stairs to the dining room. We didn’t eat much breakfast but Dada wouldn’t let us in the Christmas room until he had lighted the candles on the tree. At 8 the door opened and we all flew in to our presents. We spent a blissful morning then. I got all I wanted and more too. At one our aunt and uncle came out and we had fun showing them all our presents. Two thirty dinner was announced and my, what a dinner!! When I got up from the table late that afternoon I felt that I could never touch a thing to eat again as long as I lived (which thought did not last more than several hours, I think it my duty to add). When a boy, a friend of Walter’s, came up that afternoon and said he had yet his Christmas dinner to eat we all pities him and told him to cheer up that perhaps he might be able to live through it, though we doubted it. Well, in fact when I climbed in bed that night, I went to sleep a tired but very happy and thankful girl. Christmas day was over, but not the fun. Saturday morning the sun came in my room and woke me up. What made me have such a kind of contented feeling inside of me? Why of course, it was the day after Christmas. Who says the day after Christmas is an awful day, when you know Christmas is all over and won’t come again for another year, not I! Yes, Christmas was over but its presents weren’t gone, and neither was, as I said before, the fun, and I felt far from sad. That afternoon we had a regular gathering. Some ladies, gentlemen, children, boys and Eleanor Carpenter came and we gathered around the fire, singing songs, talked, drank tea, ate candy and cakes and had a good time. We lighted the tree again for the last time. After everyone was gone I got dressed for a large dance I was going to that evening at the big Dreer place, Rosemont. Walter and Tom went too. We had lovely favors and a dandy time. The floors were fine to dance on and there were some awfully good dancers there, so I had a perfect time, I had Chase Tatnall for my partner in the German. Florence Dreer is a nice girl and I was very glad to have met her. Sunday morning I went to Sunday school. This was the morning we were to sing our Christmas carols, so we all went into church and sat in the front pews. Just before church began we sang our carols. The church looked and smelled and was lovely with the decorations of beautiful flowers and ferns. That afternoon our four cousins, the little Dougherty children, and Aunt Gertrude came from Chestnut Hill. Little Gertrude is the dearest little thing and so are the three little boys. Dan is the funniest one. One of the things he said was “How do you make a skidoo pudding?” “How! Take 23 eggs and beat it!” Aunt Gertrude played the piano and Getrude and Graham sang, they both have fine voice s, especially Graham. We all had a regular little tea party in the dining room of tea, hot chocolate, dates, figs, fruit, candy, crackers and sandwiches. Eleanor and cousin May, her mother, drove down and had even more fun then. Monday, I spent the day up at the Carpenter’s. Elizabeth was getting ready to go to Washington. In the afternoon Tom and Elizabeth Montgomery came to see Elizabeth C. off. We all played parchesi and finished up a five pound box of Whitman’s that Wayne Vetterlein had given Elizabeth C. Fuzzy asked me to stay over night, but I couldn’t as Walter and I were going down to the Baker’s at Haverford that evening. I didn’t leave till late and the consequence was that, as I had to get dressed for that evening, we missed a train and didn’t get to the Baker’s till 9. We had lots of fun. There was Miss Perkins, Miss Wells, Jean Baker, Irma MacClintic, Dave Baker, Jack Sharwood, Brewster Taber, Bert Bailey, Walter and I. We toasted marshmellows but spent most of the evening listening to the funny stories and jokes Bert B. told. He certainly is funny, and my, but we laughed when he sang these funny songs on the piano. We didn’t leave till nearly 12. The next morning I was very lazy and had my breakfast brought up to me. I didn’t get up until after 11. That day I went to a luncheon given by Emily Saunders at half past one. The luncheon was perfect and we had such delicious things to eat! There were about 50 girls there, and we sat around small tables, 6 or 8 at each table. In the beginning I knew two girls at my table. They were Jean Long and Nancy Smith, but then I was introduced to the rest. That evening Tom and I went up to the Robinson’s to spend the evening. Eleanor was there too. She asked me to stay over night at her house. We played all sorts of games, and had lots of fun with little Jack Smucker who is so funny. Tom took Eleanor and I home. We both had a lovely long bed talk before we went to sleep. Wednesday morning Frances came up and then we all drove down to our house to ask Mama if I couldn’t stay for another night at the Carpenter’s. Mama said “yes”, much to our joy. We spent the rest of the morning at our house and then drove back to Radnor leaving Frances out at Villa Nova station to catch the train to Ardmore. That afternoon Eleanor and I spent talking and playing games. The next morning cousin May wanted me to stay over night again. We drove down again to our house to ask Mama whether I couldn’t stay. At first she wouldn’t consent, but when we told her that a lot of girls and boys are coming over that evening and what fun we would have she at last said “yes”. We spent the rest of the morning at our house then we drove to Fuzzy’s in time for lunch. That afternoon we drove up to Wayne buying things for that evening when we were going to have a little party of twelve. I had not brought an evening dress, so I dressed up in one of Elizabeth’s. She was in Washington and had left this dress. It was awfully pretty. We had lots of fun that evening. When we got to the Carpenters’, Eleanor said she was sorry but she could not have us to lunch that day as Elizabeth had asked Helen and Emilie Parker, and she could not have any more. We stayed till after 1 making burnt wood things for Christmas, and a few minutes after Emilie and Helen had come we left. When we got on the train Frances said “You come home with me” and so I did, but when we got near Bryn Mawr, Fran said “Mother doesn’t expect us, and it would be lots of fun if we could get off here, and go to Glocker’s for lunch.” But we thought perhaps we did not have enough money and we had better not. <img alt="" height="400" src="http://www.lowermerionhistory.org/photodb/full/209-3.jpg"/> Haverford Pharmacy (early 1900s)(Lower Merion Historical Society Archives) But by the time we had gotten to Haverford we decided that money or no money we would lots of fun if we got off and bought our lunch, thinking we would get it at Haverford Pharmacy. When we had gotten off we began to wish we had gotten off in Bryn Mawr because one could get so much more and better things at Glocker’s than at an old drug store, so we walked up and down, talking and pondering how we would get to Bryn Mawr, get our lunch and get back to Ardmore on 27 cents and the last two punches on a school ticket, for we had already resolved that we would go to Glocker’s. Then I grabbed Fran’s arm and said “We must go to Glocker’s, so let’s risk going on the train back to Bryn Mawr without the conductor seeing us and taking our money, it won’t hurt to cheat the R. R. once, and we can spend our 27 cents on lunch and get back to Ardmore out your last two punches, and then you can lend me money when we get to your house to get home.” No sooner said than done, and we went over to the other side of the station and caught the next train going up. <img alt="" src="http://www.lowermerionhistory.org/photodb/full/078-2.jpg"/> Bryn Mawr Station (c.1905) (Source: Gerald A. Francis Collection) My, but we were scared when the conductor marched down the aisle, but wonder of wonders he never stopped except to glance at our innocent faces (pretending to be innocent) and we were saved! We had rather guilty consciences as we got off the train, but then as Frances said “We certainly have given the Pennsylvania Raidroad enough money on tickets to make up for 8 cents.” We went over to Glocker’s where we had a dear little 26 cent lunch. We were bound to spend our last penny so we got a stick of candy which we broke in half. It certainly had been fun, and we went back to Ardmore. From 3 to 5 we spent painting our burnt wood boxes and then had to leave. Sunday I was not feeling very well after all my exertion and things to eat, nevertheless I got up and caught the 9:49 train to Sunday school, where we had a nice surprise by the teacher telling us we were all to go over to the Fox’s to sing Christmas carols and practice them so we could sing them the Sunday after Christmas. So, all the girls, boys and children piled over to Mrs. Fox’s to “shout” carols. It was lots of fun, and, I am afraid to say, Fuzzy and I had several laughing fits right in the middle of the hymns over funny things Mr. Billy Fox said. From there we crossed the street and went to church. St Martin’s is a dear little church and I am very glad we have it to go to. Fuzzy made me promise I would come down to be at the weekly Sunday afternoon Radnor Rabble meeting at the Carpenters, but when I got home I found I had such a head ache and was so tired I could not think of going back to Radnor that afternoon, so I stayed home and rested. Monday I stayed in bed, by Mama’s instructions, all day to rest up, thereby missing a morning of pleasure at the Carpenter’s and going in the afternoon to Miss Wallace’s our Sunday school teacher where we filled our Christmas stockings for the poor and afterwards have little cups of hot chocolate. But I didn’t mind much as I knew I was going to have lots of fun afterwards. Tuesday found me in town busy with my Xmas shopping and having a busy time of it. Coming out on the train I looked like a regular Santa Claus, and felt like one for I was so happy to think Christmas was “the day after tomorrow, the day after that” as Ross had said. That evening I had a busy time directing my presents, but I certainly did enjoy it thinking the old saying was true that, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Wednesday morning I was up early with the excited thought “Now it really is the day after tomorrow with no day after that.” I went up to Fuzzy’s to finish some burnt wood presents that I was making on her machine. Fuzzy and I were so excited and it was lots of fun working together. She is such a sweet girl and I certainly do love to be with her. I had to leave rather early, though, for the little boys were going to have a Christmas entertainment early that afternoon, and I wanted to be in time for it. After lunch Dad and I walked over to school and we certainly did enjoy the afternoon. The little children were so cute and the way they said their pieces and acted was fine. We all walked home together through the deep snow, laden down with the things the boys had made for the Christmas tree at school. At last Christmas Eve came and my but I was busy thinking of everything for Christmas. The Carpenter’s came down in their sleigh to bring presents and to wish us a merry Xmas, and some other people came that evening. Dan, Mama, Walter and I dressed the tree. It was such fun! Our library is such a big room with such a high ceiling that we had an enormous tree, and it really did look lovely when it was all finished, but prettier still when the candles were lighted the next morning, while all of the presents were being distributed around the room on each piece of furniture which we had each claimed. I was sent off to bed, and when they filled the stockings the boys went off to bed. When I went upstairs I looked in all the children’s rooms where they were sleeping soundly, and I thought of the excitement in the morning, and I certainly did wish it was morning! I climbed in bed beside Jack my 12 year old kid brother who ever since he was a tiny fellow has slept with me on Christmas Eve night. I was soon asleep, and the next thing I knew the grandfather’s clock downstairs was striking half past 5 in the morning, Christmas morning. It is the strangest thing, every Christmas morning Jack and I wake up at exactly the same time, and this morning we both wake up together. “Emily” says Jack, “Jack” says I, and Christmas began! Putting on my wrapper and slippers and shivering in the dark and cold we lighted a candle and crept down to see what time it was. After coming back we laid in bed till after six whispering and then we said “Let’s open our stockings.” Just then Emlen and Ross came in with theirs, and we all sat up in one bed looking at the presents “Santa Claus” had brought us. It certainly was fun! My stocking was stuffed full and overflowing with lovely things, and my, but I was glad it was Christmas. Then we heard Polly laughing so we knew she was awake, so we all flew to see our precious little sister open her little stocking. She had just begun on it when we entered and her eyes were as big as saucers. After that we all got dressed and went down stairs to the dining room. We didn’t eat much breakfast but Dada wouldn’t let us in the Christmas room until he had lighted the candles on the tree. At 8 the door opened and we all flew in to our presents. We spent a blissful morning then. I got all I wanted and more too. At one our aunt and uncle came out and we had fun showing them all our presents. Two thirty dinner was announced and my, what a dinner!! When I got up from the table late that afternoon I felt that I could never touch a thing to eat again as long as I lived (which thought did not last more than several hours, I think it my duty to add). When a boy, a friend of Walter’s, came up that afternoon and said he had yet his Christmas dinner to eat we all pities him and told him to cheer up that perhaps he might be able to live through it, though we doubted it. Well, in fact when I climbed in bed that night, I went to sleep a tired but very happy and thankful girl. Christmas day was over, but not the fun. Saturday morning the sun came in my room and woke me up. What made me have such a kind of contented feeling inside of me? Why of course, it was the day after Christmas. Who says the day after Christmas is an awful day, when you know Christmas is all over and won’t come again for another year, not I! Yes, Christmas was over but its presents weren’t gone, and neither was, as I said before, the fun, and I felt far from sad. That afternoon we had a regular gathering. Some ladies, gentlemen, children, boys and Eleanor Carpenter came and we gathered around the fire, singing songs, talked, drank tea, ate candy and cakes and had a good time. We lighted the tree again for the last time. After everyone was gone I got dressed for a large dance I was going to that evening at the big Dreer place, Rosemont. Walter and Tom went too. We had lovely favors and a dandy time. The floors were fine to dance on and there were some awfully good dancers there, so I had a perfect time, I had Chase Tatnall for my partner in the German. Florence Dreer is a nice girl and I was very glad to have met her. Sunday morning I went to Sunday school. This was the morning we were to sing our Christmas carols, so we all went into church and sat in the front pews. Just before church began we sang our carols. The church looked and smelled and was lovely with the decorations of beautiful flowers and ferns. That afternoon our four cousins, the little Dougherty children, and Aunt Gertrude came from Chestnut Hill. Little Gertrude is the dearest little thing and so are the three little boys. Dan is the funniest one. One of the things he said was “How do you make a skidoo pudding?” “How! Take 23 eggs and beat it!” Aunt Gertrude played the piano and Getrude and Graham sang, they both have fine voice s, especially Graham. We all had a regular little tea party in the dining room of tea, hot chocolate, dates, figs, fruit, candy, crackers and sandwiches. Eleanor and cousin May, her mother, drove down and had even more fun then. Monday, I spent the day up at the Carpenter’s. Elizabeth was getting ready to go to Washington. In the afternoon Tom and Elizabeth Montgomery came to see Elizabeth C. off. We all played parchesi and finished up a five pound box of Whitman’s that Wayne Vetterlein had given Elizabeth C. Fuzzy asked me to stay over night, but I couldn’t as Walter and I were going down to the Baker’s at Haverford that evening. I didn’t leave till late and the consequence was that, as I had to get dressed for that evening, we missed a train and didn’t get to the Baker’s till 9. We had lots of fun. There was Miss Perkins, Miss Wells, Jean Baker, Irma MacClintic, Dave Baker, Jack Sharwood, Brewster Taber, Bert Bailey, Walter and I. We toasted marshmellows but spent most of the evening listening to the funny stories and jokes Bert B. told. He certainly is funny, and my, but we laughed when he sang these funny songs on the piano. We didn’t leave till nearly 12. The next morning I was very lazy and had my breakfast brought up to me. I didn’t get up until after 11. That day I went to a luncheon given by Emily Saunders at half past one. The luncheon was perfect and we had such delicious things to eat! There were about 50 girls there, and we sat around small tables, 6 or 8 at each table. In the beginning I knew two girls at my table. They were Jean Long and Nancy Smith, but then I was introduced to the rest. That evening Tom and I went up to the Robinson’s to spend the evening. Eleanor was there too. She asked me to stay over night at her house. We played all sorts of games, and had lots of fun with little Jack Smucker who is so funny. Tom took Eleanor and I home. We both had a lovely long bed talk before we went to sleep. Wednesday morning Frances came up and then we all drove down to our house to ask Mama if I couldn’t stay for another night at the Carpenter’s. Mama said “yes”, much to our joy. We spent the rest of the morning at our house and then drove back to Radnor leaving Frances out at Villa Nova station to catch the train to Ardmore. That afternoon Eleanor and I spent talking and playing games. The next morning cousin May wanted me to stay over night again. We drove down again to our house to ask Mama whether I couldn’t stay. At first she wouldn’t consent, but when we told her that a lot of girls and boys are coming over that evening and what fun we would have she at last said “yes”. We spent the rest of the morning at our house then we drove to Fuzzy’s in time for lunch. That afternoon we drove up to Wayne buying things for that evening when we were going to have a little party of twelve. I had not brought an evening dress, so I dressed up in one of Elizabeth’s. She was in Washington and had left this dress. It was awfully pretty. We had lots of fun that evening. We played Baston and “up Jenkins” and had ice cream, cake and candy. Sept. 9, 1909Reading this over I find that I stopped without finishing what I did the rest of the vacation, so I will write as much as I remember. On Friday I left the Carpenter’s for home so that I could get ready to go in town to spend the night at my aunt’s and have our New Year’s dinner there. Saturday I spent in town coming out in time for a dance to be given at the Montgomery’s. I had Gilbert Montgomery for the German. We had such nice favors and had a very nice time. After this I can’t remember. So said Cecily McMenamin, legendary buyer for Brown Thomas, of the designer who, throughout the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, dressed the most stylish women in Ireland and abroad, including Miranda Iveagh, Terry Keane, Patricia Jorgensen and various socialite Kennedys and Whitneys, who were charmed by the combination of elegance and romance in her clothes.</h2> Pat, who died on Monday, aged 80, created clothes that were witty, impeccably finished and always a sophisticated take on Irishness -- exquisite tweeds, knits and linen, worked into classic pieces that had a magic ability to find and flatter the character of the wearer. "Pat had an amazing imagination and she was very inventive, I think she was almost psychic," Iveagh once said of the woman who was a friend as well as designer. Miranda once wore a glorious white Pat Crowley for the cover of Town & Country magazine. "She dressed me regularly and I always felt frightfully happy in her clothes. She dressed you in such a witty way, to fit your character. And she herself was terribly stylish," Iveagh said. But more even than her considerable talents as a designer, Pat Crowley was admired for her warmth, vivacity and enviable business sense. A redoubtable woman, she learned her trade young, studying fashion at the Grafton Academy, because, as she said "my mother said that a girl should always know how to make her own clothes". The fact Pat was able to move from the cottage industry of running up dresses for herself to an international trade in sleek, even avant-garde clothes, demonstrates her considerable scope. Before that, she was an air hostess at a time when that was probably the most glamorous job in Ireland, and was on board the first-ever transatlantic flight out of Ireland. No doubt her good looks -- tall, slender, with high cheekbones and a mane of glorious copper hair -- helped, but it was Pat's keen intelligence and ambition that moved her through the next phase of her life. She married Conor Crowley, an accountant, of Stokes, Kennedy Crowley, after they met at a rugby match (Conor's mother apparently pointed Pat out, her eye caught by the style and elegance Pat was famous for, and suggested he ask her out; in fact, Conor already had). But rather than settle down to a life of domesticity and children, unlike the vast majority of women at that time, Pat, according to her daughter Lisa, showed remarkable decisiveness and independence of mind, and went on the pill. "She hid the pill under the floor boards," Lisa said. "She was a thoroughly modern woman." Instead, Pat went to work for Irene Gilbert, notoriously shy and an expert craftsman, who developed a close relationship with Grace Kelly, helping to create Princess Grace's signature look of cool elegance, including a Carrickmacross lace evening dress that featured in the Grace Kelly retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London some years ago. There, Pat learned the business of fashion design, including the all-important sales, marketing and management skills. At these, she proved naturally adept: "She had a way of charming husbands into spending a lot more than they thought they would spend on their wives," Iveagh would later say. That was a smart move at a time when very few women would have had an independent income. Grace O'Shaughnessy, who modelled for Irene at thay time, and knew Pat well, remembers her as "one of those amazing, enviable people who can do anything they set their mind to. She was lively, engaging, and a wonderful entertainer. She was also decisive and straight-forward; she told it like it was. She had great confidence, the ability to be her own woman." After eight years with Gilbert, Pat launched her own line, initially just knitwear and crochet, but soon branching out into complete collections of day and eveningwear, where she showed how capable she was of adapting her chosen materials to both the practicalities of day, and the glamour of night. She understood her audience to perfection, and her first collection, in 1968, was an immediate success. From that point on, Pat Crowley became de rigueur for Irish women of a certain aspiration, and every age. Weddings, christenings and 21sts in the most beautiful houses around the country were a sea of Pat Crowley dresses as the milestones of life were celebrated and commemorated. Eileen, the Countess Mountcharles, sculptor Linda Brunker and actress Rosaleen Linehan, were all to be found in the audience at Pat's shows -- which she staged and compered herself, with a clever understanding that her personality was as much a part of the irresistible mix as her fabric and cut. All the top models of their time took to the catwalk, including Laura Bermingham, Marie Staunton and Sonia Reynolds, who remembers those days with great affection. "I was in my early 20s then, and modelling for Pat Crowley felt like entering another world, it was an honour to be part of it," Sonia says. "She was one of the most elegant women in fashion, and commanded huge respect. The shows in her salon, although very simple, had wonderful atmosphere, they were definitely 'society', and everything was treated with such perfection." Sonia also recalls that "Pat also had a slightly wicked sense of humour, so there was fun too". Her grasp of the business side was excellent, and at one stage she employed 600 knitters, dotted around the country, while also stocking Valentino and Ungaro alongside her own creations. Those who worked with and for her recall the strong sense of loyalty that meant she maintained relationships, with employees and customers, year after year. Pat may have delayed starting a family, but she and Conor went on to have three children -- Vernon, Lisa, and Fiona -- who grew up at Dolly's Grove in Dunboyne, Co Meath, a 62-acre stud farm, where Pat rode every day, dividing her time between the business that she ran so successfully for so long, and her beloved horses. She also cooked and created a beautiful house. Pat continued, full of the same energy and wit, almost immune to the passing of time it seemed, until she broke her hip in 1999. Just a few months later, her husband Conor died very suddenly while Pat was in New York. That was a devastating blow, one from which Pat never quite recovered. She retired the following year, and sold Dolly's Grove and her horses shortly afterwards, for an estimated €4.25m. Sadly though, the onset of Alzheimer's, increasingly evident since Conor's death, could no longer be avoided, and Lisa, Pat's daughter, in an interview with Victoria Mary Clarke for this paper in 2004, spoke of how her mother was "regressing back to childhood ... But she's in good spirits. She's oblivious to the fact that she needs help". Lisa also described the pattern of some few precious moments of lucidity, surrounded by many harsh and difficult times, as her mother steadily lost contact with her own memories Later, Pat moved to a nursing home, where she died on Monday. For over three decades she was the glowing centre of Irish fashion, a pioneer of those modern designers whose clothes are an homage to traditional Irish crafts and fabrics. She understood style and elegance, and how these things will always trump trends. </div>

"Everyone was dressed up. The younger people, especially, were wearing beautiful clothes," Mr. Rodriguez said. "It used to be that fashion kids were too cool to dress up." It would seem that a tectonic shift is happening in after-eight wardrobes. While ripped boyfriend-jeans with a velvet jacket, or a fisherman sweater with a sequin skirt qualified as evening chic for the last several years, dressing up—in the fullest and most feminine sense of the term—is cool again. Bungalow 8 founder Amy Sacco, who is currently the creative director of special projects at restaurant group LDV Hospitality, has been seeing a spike in formality. "Both women and men are making more of an effort," she said. "Ball gowns and tuxes are a quarter of the room from October to December, mixed with lots of cocktail attire." Sofia Barattieri, founder of social shopping site Motilo, said she has noticed more red lipstick, spindly high heels and shimmery cocktail dresses in recommendations for night-out style from the site's coterie of "Motilo girls" (socialites and chic lasses who dispense fashion advice). "The evening looks being proposed now are much more sexy and glamorous than when we launched in 2011," said Ms. Barattieri. "I think after the economic crisis, women want to have more fun." Stylist and shoe designer Tabitha Simmons, whose designs often reference retro glamour, welcomes the change. "It's important to make the time to celebrate your own femininity and elegance," she said. "I'm in full support." She cited as an example of the shift the very polished outfit that model and television host Alexa Chung donned for her own 30th birthday party earlier this month—a white bouclé Chanel coatdress with jeweled buttons, finished with crimson lips. It was a far cry from Ms. Chung's more typically gamine ensembles. "She looked beautiful," said Ms. Simmons. <div readability='6.5' class='module inset-blockquote'> <blockquote readability='6'> “ Even designers who are known more for their cerebral daywear than after-sunset looks are going glam. ” </blockquote> </div> Personally, I've always been a bit allergic to going all-out for a night out. Wearing a full face of makeup, a floor-length gown and having my hair done for a party has always made me feel overcooked. But recently, I've been inspired to roll on fishnet stockings, slide into slinky cocktail dresses and hot- roller my hair. Perhaps it's because designers who are known more for their cerebral daywear than after-sunset looks are going glam. This fall, we saw Miuccia Prada's sexy off-the-shoulder dresses and fabulous furs, Dries Van Noten's floaty ostrich feather shifts and Marc Jacobs's sequined evening dresses and fox stoles. "Over the last couple seasons it became clear that designers were putting more of an emphasis on evening wear," said Noor Al Sabah, fashion director of On Motcomb, a new London boutique that specializes in party frocks from the likes of Jason Wu, Carolina Herrera and Marios Schwab. "In turn," she added, "I noticed a slow shift in the way women dressed to go out." Sonnet Stanfill, curator of the coming exhibition "The Glamour of Italian Fashion" at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, also points to brands ratcheting up their fanciful offerings. "The fact that Dolce & Gabbana and Giambattista Valli launched couture lines in just the past two years proves there's more demand for evening wear, especially in emerging markets," she said. That's why brands like Chanel, Valentino and Dior increasingly take their couture shows on the road to Russia and China. "In emerging markets," said Mario Ortelli, a senior luxury analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, "sophisticated consumers have more occasion to wear this kind of evening dress." Beauty also plays a crucial role in this shift. "We went through a time where an understated makeup look was more on trend," said Pat McGrath, a makeup artist and the global creative-design director of Procter & Gamble, where she oversees CoverGirl, Max Factor and Dolce & Gabbana's cosmetics line. Now, Ms. McGrath sees women taking more risks, and does her part to encourage it. For Dolce & Gabbana's fall show, she combined smoky eyes with bold-hued lips, instead of choosing one or the other. James Pryce, a hair stylist at Josh Wood salon in London—and the former tress-tender of the Duchess of Cambridge—said that more of his clients (including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie) are coming in for pre-soiree 'dos. He recommends styles that aren't quite perfect. "I like hair that looks almost like the woman has done it herself," he said. "But that, of course, takes a considerable amount of work." The slightly undone beehive is one of his favorite styles of the moment. For decadent-night-life inspiration, there is no shortage of new books and exhibitions. Diana Oswald's recent Rizzoli title, "Debutantes: When Glamour was Born," provides a glimpse into the golden age of coming-out parties. Then there's the exhibit " Isabella Blow : Fashion Galore!" which runs through March at London's Somerset House and features Daphne Guinness's personal collection of the late Ms. Blow's clothing, including an awe-inspiring party wardrobe. I suspect a lot of you may be in that awful place right now because suddenly, it's 22 December again and, damn Santa's beard, your <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/christmas" id="readabilityLink-1" name="readabilityLink-1" style="color: inherit; text-decoration: none;" title="More from the Guardian on Christmas">Christmas</a><a class="readability-DoNotFootnote" href="#readabilityFootnoteLink-1" style="color: inherit;">[1] </a> present shopping is not even begun. You've put it off and put it off and now there's nothing for it but to head out sometime in the next 48 hours to push through the zomboid hordes in pursuit of some truly mundane, tedious, mass-produced stuff. This year I have spared myself that sorry charade. I have made an effort. Indeed, I have made a superhuman effort. I sit here now with every present bought. More importantly, I have made interesting, unexpected choices designed to thrill, delight, or, at the very least, that contain some element of thought-provoking originality. When you leave yourself just one rushed hour in a heaving department store to do all your Christmas shopping the quality of the gifts can't help but suffer. Perfume for your granny? Genius, that'll go nicely with the other 43 bottles she's guiltily stashed in her old coal bunker. Box set of Gavin and Stacey for your auntie? Good call, because she's only seen every single episode seven times on the telly. Spanner set for your brother-in-law? Just the job, because nut tops will always need tightening and you can never, ever second-guess a nut top's width. Come on! You'd be better off going up to them all on Christmas Day, springing their gobs open by pressing the hinges either side of their jaws and then stuffing a 20-quid note down their gullets. Meanwhile, behold my finely honed generosities. For my Uncle Eric, a keen gardener, instead of the usual trowel or stone badger I have bought the seed of the rare umbarada plant. Flowering in late spring it gives forth iridescent, rainbow-hued blooms some three feet across. It emits a fragrance so beautiful that it reduces you to tears and its stem, when boiled up and taken in tea form, induces a non-addictive euphoria that can be described as nothing less than smashing. For my nephew Daniel, a commited neu thrash death metal bassist, instead of the customary aftershave I have booked a three-day session with a Japanese Buddhist master who will awaken in him the realisation that suffering can become the means of tremendous growth. The master will also be giving the lad some tips on how to get the best sound out of a fretless five-string. No tasteful vase or latest Lynda La Plante for the love of my life. Instead, on Christmas Day I've hired a 20-piece orchestra to set up in the front garden. In full evening dress I shall sing Nat King Cole's The Very Thought of You to her on bended knee and, as I do so, a flock of specially trained, brightly coloured hummingbirds will dart around my head, their hums perfectly pitched to the music. There's more: I've booked a bungee jump from the Clifton Suspension Bridge for my dear old Mum. She'll relish the challenge! And marvel at its unexpectedness! To my maritime-inclined Dad I shall present a scale model of the Mary Rose woven from the hair of two women I know called Mary and Rose. For a mate's doddery old dog I've even procured a robo-cat with adjustable speed settings ranging from "sedate amble" to "practically carked it". The list goes on. I'm looking forward to some truly effusive thank you letters. But hold on there. Isn't the best kindness of all the kindness of strangers? Yes it is. And that's why I've gone to all the trouble of getting together a few pressies for people I've never even met. For the members of our ruling Tory elite I've purchased stick-on plastic moulds taken from the bottom half of Bruce Forsyth's head. For, as we turn our thoughts at this time of year to the homeless, the penniless and the friendless, let us not forget the chinless. For the Chapman Brothers I've splashed out on a Beano album. (It feels to me like they might quite welcome a bit of a giggle). Oh, and I've got Boris Johnson a book on the Great Chain of Being. This is the medieval concept of a God-decreed, unbreakable hierarchy in which the best of humans – eg tubby mayors – sit around drinking gold, eating roast eagles and generally running things, while those belonging to the lower echelons, such as poor people, spend their entire lives gratefully emptying their superiors' latrines. I'm sure El Bumblero will be terrifically chuffed to have his world-view affirmed by the 12th century. One Christmas present notion I did toy with involved offering Jeremy Kyle a sharp blow to the head. The thinking was that this would result in him experiencing the general slowness, confusion and emotional turmoil equivalent to that possessed by his average guest, thus making him eligible to interview himself on his own show. I thought it might rather be fun for all of us to watch him giving himself grief for not being able to understand things and, for him, it would be a valuable lesson on how it feels to be barked at in front of a million people by a trembly-legged toy poodle that needs its bottom wiped. Obviously, the plan falls at the first hurdle. He's just not going to accept a sharp blow to the head, is he? He's not stupid. There is a downside to all of this of course. To organise these gifts has taken me most of the year during which I've had little or no time to devote to anything else, not even personal hygiene. It's also cost about three hundred grand. Consequently I've done no actual work, I'm deep in debt and I don't half niff. But it's done, that's the main thing. And by my reckoning I've put in 20 years' worth of effort and money so I don't have to bother again till 2033. Result! Meanwhile, if you're one of the tardy millions yet to brave the tat-laden shelves and you're starting to realise that if it's the thought that counts then it follows that it's the lack of thought that really doesn't count much at all, then there is always the 20-pound note gullet-stuffing option I mentioned earlier. After all, it's got to be preferable to some jars of chutney in a straw-lined wooden box or a pair of itchy gloves.
