The future king of England donned a replica of the traditional Royal Christening Robe for his special day — read on for more details on the precious gown!
Prince George made his second public appearance on Oct. 23 at St. James’ Palace for his christening, where the 3-month-old royal was dressed to the nines for his special day. His intricate gown might have looked like the traditional royal dress, but it was actually a replica of the original garment to preserve the delicate creation. Prince George’s replica gown was crafted by the Queen’s couturier Angela Kelly — and it looked beautiful on the baby boy!
Prince George’s Christening Gown — The History Behind His Royal Christening Robe:
The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace and lined with white satin, was designed in 1841 for the christening of Queen Victoria‘s eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal. Since then, it has been worn by over 60 royals on their christening day and was crafted by the Embroiderer to the Queen, Janet Sutherland. Janet was the daughter of a Scottish coal miner. In order to preserve the creation, the Queen enlisted her couturier to craft a hand-made replica version in 2008.
While Prince George’s gown is only a few years old, he isn’t the first baby to dress in the royal garment. In fact, James, Viscount Severn, was the first member of the Royal Family to wear the replica creation at his christening, which took place at the private chapel at Windsor Castle in April 2008.
The Palace confirmed that the little royal would wear the robe on his special day in a statement. “Prince George will wear the hand made replica of the Royal Christening Robe, made by Angela Kelly, Dressmaker to The Queen.”
While Prince George may not the first to suit up in the attire he’s certainly making history in the special gown — and he looked so cute!
