The youngster, who will be christened this Wednesday, will wear a copy of the garment that has been worn by over 60 royal babies.

According to reports, the original gown is now so fragile, a copy had to be made by the Queen's dressmaker Angela Kelly.

Queen Victoria commissioned the original gown – worn by both Prince Charles and Prince William – after her marriage to her cousin Prince Albert in 1840.

She was so enamoured by her ivory silk wedding gown, trimmed with Honiton bobbin lace that she commissioned a lace maker from the same part of Devon to create some lace for the christening garment.

The last royal baby to wear the original robe was Lady Louise Windsor, the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, who was born in 2003.
