Although they’re calling it a silent auction, the group planning the Shepherd’s Table’s sixth annual fundraising gala isn’t staying quiet about its first auction.
People who want to draw up a will, get their teeth brightened, spend time at a beach house, take a personally-guided tour of Sandy Island or eat at just about any restaurant in town can buy the service or item they want and feed the hungry in Conway at the same time.
The groundbreaking event is part of this year’s gala planned for Oct. 10 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Riverside Club in Conway.
Janet Howle, who is heading up the silent auction, says Conway’s business community and individual citizens have been generous in donating to the silent auction. She’s eagerly awaiting next Thursday’s big event hoping to make about $5,000 to feed people who just don’t have enough money to prepare their own healthy meals.
Planners hope to entertain as many as 300 people at the gala with this year’s theme of Carolina Harvest.
Although the party will still feature Bistro chef Darren Smith’s delicious food, it will switch gears with its dress and decorations, creating a down-on-the-farm evening complete with mums, pumpkins, jeans and overalls.
The silent auction will begin at 5 p.m., so folks who hope to bid might want to get there a little early to check out all the great offers. It will cut off at 7:30 p.m., so everyone will have time to find out what they’ve bought and make their payments before the end of the party. Cash, checks and debit cards will be accepted.
Some of the more unusual items up for bid include pledges by Conway attorney John Long to draw up a will and by his father Furman Long to provide a personal tour of Sandy Island. Conway interior designer Lynn Smith is offering some design time, Mike Altman is providing a stay in a Surfside beach house and Elliott Realty is providing a North Myrtle Beach condominium for a successful bidder. The Sea Mist Resort is also offering a two-night stay. There will even be a beach kayak up for bid.
Golf rounds will be available for The Legends, Wild Wing, the Witch, Conway Country Club and Coastal Carolina’s Hackler course, and Robert Harper with ProG Golf Group, Southern Dunes has promised several rounds for foursomes.
Carolina Forest Family and Cosmetic Dentistry will whiten someone’s teeth and Pet Pizazz will groom a pet. Black’s Tire, Palmetto Chevrolet and Hardwick’s Luke-It all want to change someone’s oil. Martin’s Tire is offering an oil change and tire rotation.
The Tire Supermarket Inc. is promising to rotate and balance tires, Graham Golf Cars will donate a golf cart cover, Peggy Christie is offering a Tryke and Hucks and Washington is donating a chair.
Also up for bid will be a basket from Ultimate Gullah; a bag of goodies from Cecil Chandler of TV-15; lamps from Shirley LaForce; a Tiger Woods print from Waccamaw Gallery and Frame Shop; a table grill from Lowe’s; manicures and/or haircuts from Fingertips, Totally Polished Hair and Nail Salon, Rivertown Fitness Salon and Spa, Hers and His and Spa on Main; a fall wreath from Jordan’s Nursery and Florist; a fall arrangement from Granny’s Florist; Gamecock and Clemson wreaths from Rivertown Pharmacy; a wall clock from Big Lots; one fall wreath and one Christmas wreath from Angie Martin; a football item from Bats, Balls and Gloves; a basketball signed by the Coastal Carolina University basketball team; a football signed by football coach Joe Moglia; and a wreath from Dr. Jen.
But keep reading; that’s not all.
Dale and Larry Timbes are donating a basket with towels and bathroom accessories. The auction will also include several homemade cakes coordinated by Rennie Mincey and gift certificates to ParkSmith, Amanda’s Bridal, Papa’s General Store, Little Treasures Consignment, Little Angels, Grady’s Jewelers, Consignment on Fifth, Backwoods Landscaping, Palmetto Patio and Hearth, Conway Paint and Wall Center and Curtains-N-Things, and for local restaurants including Groucho’s, the Trestle Bakery, Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant, El Cerro Grande Mexican Grill, Fatz, Eatz and Drinkz, Donzelle’s, Copper’s, Three Guys Subs and Pies, Bellissimo’s, Applebee’s, Radd Dew’s, The Outer Limits, The Olive Garden and Crady’s. Regina Causey is offering a framed print of Conway’s historical locations.
Thanks to Horry Electric, the group also has two all-sports tickets, along with two jackets and two hats from Conway High School to auction.
There’s also lots of fun to be had for successful bidders with tickets to the Theatre of the Republic’s Christmas, the Palace Theater, Brookgreen Gardens and The Carolina Opry.
Although the Shepherd’s Table assembled a four-person auction committee, the entire board has been helping collect items for the auction. Today is the final day for someone to donate an auction item, so don’t miss the fun or a great chance to advertise a business or service. The nonprofit group is providing tax letters to donors.
Another first for this year’s gala is sponsorships. For $400, a donor can get eight tickets and have their name printed on a banner displayed at the gala.
This has also been a popular idea with sponsorships already going to Chancel Builders, Horry Electric, Peoples Underwriters, Coastal Carolina University, Conway National Bank, the Sansbury Family, Goldfinch Funeral Home and one benefactor who wished to remain anonymous. There’s still time to be a benefactor.
Tickets for the gala are on sale daily at the Shepherd’s Table from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. for $50 each, and board members are also selling them.
The gala will begin with the silent auction at 5 p.m., which organizers hope will be set up outside, along with gospel music by the Crystal River Bluegrass Gospel Band and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
