The occasion may have been brighter than the sun, but the weather in Manhattan for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Parade was decidedly glacial.
And it's never easy for our celebrated performers and celebrities to dress for such a chill while still showing off outfits that stand out amongst a very big crowd.
Luckily at this time of year, every corner in Manhattan features a stand selling the most magnificent collection of ear warmers and it was to these trusty favourites that Ariana Grande and Megan Hilty turned.
Keeping warm... the chic way: Ariana Grande remained toasty on her float by wearing ear muffs and a powder blue wool coat on Thursday for Macy's Annual Thanksgiving parade
Grande, 20, sang Last Christmas' from her float while clad in a thick powder blue coat and large cream earmuffs.
She tweeted: 'Happy Thanksgivinggg my loves...Wishing you a beautiful holiday with your families and loved ones. I am so thankful for you. (sic)'
Elsewhere in the parade, talk show host Jimmy Fallon joined the Sesame Street' float with Elmo, Cookie Monster, the Count, and Big Bird, who all sang 'Somebody Come and Play'.
Winter chic: Ariana looked lovely in her white and blue outfit as she sat amongst brightly wrapped parcels
Wrapped up to the Hilt-y: Megan went for a puffer jacket just to make sure she bolted out that Manhattan chill
Too cool to care: The legendary Joan Jett didn't need muffs over her slick black helmet of hair but she did throw another coat over her burgundy PVC jacket
Jimmy had earlier joked on Twitter: 'I'm on the 'Sesame Street' float in the parade ... But it'll be awkward when Big Bird asks, 'What're you having for dinner?' '
Country star Carrie Underwood wrote: 'I have much to be thankful for...Family, friends and fans! Hope you all have a blessed day. Lots of love from me to you! #HappyThanksgiving.(sic)'
Songstress Megan Hilty also opted for the massive muffs in black, but took no chances when it came to the chill so added a puffer jacket to to the ensemble.
She was a massive hit with her version of The Carpenters' Merry Christmas, Darling sung in the style of Marilyn Monroe.
Well, hello red: Kellie Pickle threw caution and her coat to the wind to steal the show
Warm and fuzzy: Ariana added leather trousers into the mix while Cher wore black and white trousers
Dr Zhivago: Kellie Pickler looked like a Russian romantic heroine in this stunning coat
Fairytale: Sandra Lee and Lee and Pickler went for the storybook approach for keeping warm
The legendary Joan Jett, 55, could never be seen in a pair of the girlie' favourites, however.
Instead, the catsuit wearing favourite stuck with her almost helmet-like iconic black '70s shag cut and threw a black overcoat over her burgundy PVC trench.
Joan performed her hit Any Weather with the Blackhearts, which made for a surprisingly punk moment amidst all the family fun.
Punk! Joan looks incredible for 55, and despite the odd wobble... gave a great rendition
Talk about upstaged: Ariana's big earmuffs were still dwarfed by Dora the Explorer's head
Putting on a show: Kristin walloped through Sinatra classic New York, New York
The British are coming: Ms Lloyd beamed as she surveyed the crowds beneath her
Kristin Chenoweth came in for a spot of strife after a wobble at the beginning of New York, New York but managed to recover her stride nicely.
British singer Cher Lloyd also made a smiley appearance.
Kellie Pickler styled her song Little Bit Gypsy out in a coat that was more Little Bit Russian Royalty, and looked stunning with movie star golden waves.
There seemed to be some confusion over Carrie Underwood's involvement, however.
Winner: Megan was one of the crowd's big favourites
Adorable: Ariana's look was a perfect mix of cute and fierce
High spirits: Kristin and Kellie were delighted to be involved
What a good boy: Taylor Kinney attended the 87th parade with his mother, Pamela
Earlier in the week, the country superstar was pictured at rehearsals for the parade and at one point was seated on a sofa surrounded by children in what looked like a planned scene from her new Sound of Music project.
But on Thursday she simply introduced cast members before they performed a scene from the NBC reboot ahead of the parade.
It isn't clear if she was scheduled to perform but the 30-year-old has admitted to getting hate tweets from fans of the original musical starring Julie Andrews.
Larger than life: There were some seriously huge performers
Class acts: Jimmy Fallon got to perform with Big Bird and Cookie Monster
What a dog day: Snoopy made his annual appearance
