Hilary Duff is learning firsthand how much little boys love their mamas.

After discovering she was pregnant with a son, the actress admits she feared an unknown future — worries that 19-month-old Luca Cruz has since washed away.

“I actually had this strong intuition that I was having a boy, and I was so excited, but I grew up with a sister and I was like, ‘I don’t know what to do with a boy!’” Duff, 26, told reporters at Haylie Duff‘s The Real Girl’s Kitchen book signing in Los Angeles.

“The bond has been so incredible! I love play wrestling with him and I love how sweet and cuddly he gets.”

She adds, “The mom and boy relationship is really, really sweet and I’m so obsessed with him.”

So much so that Duff says if she expands her family further, she wouldn’t mind welcoming a second son. “If I had another boy, I would be happy, but I would like to try for a girl and I’m not sure that I want to have three kids,” she says with a laugh.

According to Duff, her husband Mike Comrie is equally smitten with their son. “He’s an amazing father,” she says. “He’s so patient and loving and involved. He’s all the things that I knew that he would be.”

Now that Luca has come into his own, Duff shares her toddler takes after both of his parents — in looks and personality.

He is so physical so I think he gets a lot of that from my husband. He just goes and goes. We joke that someone put batteries in him and that we haven’t been able to find them because he’s just a maniac all day,” she explains. “He’s great and really sweet and he maybe has a little bit of my temper. He can snap pretty quick, but he bounces back really quickly too.”

The couple have planned to take their tot trick-or-treating, although Duff admits Luca is only likely to “last a block” before turning toward home. But while his candy stash may come up short, the toddler has a long list of costumes to choose from for the festive night out.

“He might have a wardrobe change. He is obsessed with firemen so he’s going to be a fireman or Thomas the Train [which] I think is adorable,” Duff says. “Then we have a backup Fantastic Mr. Fox coat, which is so, so cute. I want him to wear it in his everyday life, it’s that cute.”

While the family tends to stick to healthy habits, Duff was looking forward to indulging Luca’s sweet tooth during Halloween — that is, until her son turned her down.

“Mike’s like, ‘If he doesn’t want it, stop trying to force it on him,’” she shares while laughing. “And I’m like, ‘I’m not forcing it on him! Kids like chocolate!’”
