The Ionia High School Theatre will be performing “Seussical” this weekend.

In preparation for opening night Friday, the group has dress rehearsals scheduled throughout the week. During Monday evening's dress rehearsal, the students dressed in full costume to get a feel for how the production will progress.

A variety of characters from Dr. Seuss children's books are featured in the play, such as “The Cat,” played by Zack Curtis; Thing 1 and 2, played by Lauren Curtis and Paige Hamacher; and Horton, portrayed by Israel Blackburn.

“Seussical,” which is a musical written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, showcases a large number of Dr. Seuss works, such as “Horton Hears a Who,” “The Lorax,” “The Cat in the Hat,” and “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Overall, the play focuses on Horton the elephant who tries to protect the people of Who-ville, but includes characters and plot scenarios from different Seuss works.

For instance, Gertrude McFuzz, played by Bayley Rewa, envies the tail feathers of Mayzie and the other birds. Mayzie is portrayed by Alexandra Allen, and the birds are played by Emily Nemeth, Mckenzie Dood and Holly Simon.

While Horton tries to protect the people of Who-ville, the Cat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 wreak havoc on his life and creating conflict in the plot.

The play is directed by Trish Carter and Cathy Haney assisted in the creation of costumes for this performance. Although Haney typically is involved with costume work for the Ionia Community Theatre, her history with the play provided her with the opportunity to provide costumes for this production, as well.

“Some of the costumes from the original production were fine, but others had to be altered and some need to be completely remade,” said Haney.

“Seussical” will be performed at Watt Auditorium, located inside the Ionia Middle School. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $8 for adults.

Performances will take place Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
