Jakarta’s fashion scene just got merrier this festive season. Last week, Apparelindo Mitra Andalan, a subsidiary of the Jakarta-based garment company Pan Brothers, introduced two world-famous fashion brands from Thailand — Greyhound and Fly Now.

These two brands are now available exclusively at Galeries Lafayette in Pacific Place, South Jakarta.

“I’m personally a big fan of both fashion brands,” said Lydia Setiawan, director of Apparelindo.

Greyhound first started as a label for men’s casual wear in Bangkok in 1980. Their signature style is “basic with a twist.” In 1990, the brand added lines in women’s wear, leather goods and accessories.

Today, the label has 14 stand-alone and shop-in-shop boutiques in Bangkok. Their collections are also available in boutiques and department stores in the world’s fashion capitals, including Paris, Berlin, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Fly Now is spearheaded by well-known Thai fashion designer and entrepreneur Somchai Songwattana. The label started with a small ladies-wear collection in 1983 and worked its way up ,to become one of the top names in Thailand’s fashion industry with 10 stand-alone shops and more than 60 concessions across that country.

Lydia believes both labels will be well received in Jakarta.

“Both have strong and distinctive characters,” she said. “ Fly Now has simple, yet elegant designs that highlight a woman’s physical assets, while Greyhound has a cool and edgy style for both men and women.”

According to Lydia, all production for both fashion labels takes place in Thailand.

The brand also is a great showcase for fine needlework, designed with the wearer in mind.

“The hemlines are all neatly hand-stitched,” she said, referring to the dress that she was wearing. “And it’s lined with silk on the inside, so that it feels very soft and cool on the skin.”

The brands were launched with a fashion show in Galeries Lafayette Jakarta last week, where both labels presented their Autumn/Winter 2013 collections.

Greyhound’s collection, themed “Illusions in the Dark,” inspired by the French animated movie “Peur[s] du Noir” (“Fear[s] of the Dark”), the brand offers finely tailored men’s and women’s daily and evening wear. Like the animated movie, the collection is mainly black and white, with a few dark gray, deep red and terra-cotta tints in between.

Greyhound’s women collection, as presented in the fashion show, is chic and sassy.

Greyhound’s men’s collection is also quite notable given its suave urbane look. It consists of tailored jackets, sweaters, T-shirts and slim-fit pants. Some of the sweaters and T-shirts are embellished with silver and nickel zippers.

Jakarta’s socialite and director of modeling agency F-Models International, Fritz Panjaitan, was excited about Greyhound’s Jakarta launch.

“I love Greyhound’s men’s wear,” he said. “I think the designs are very simple, yet unique and fashionable.”

“Now I don’t have to travel very far to buy it,” he added.

Fly Now ’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection is inspired by flowers. It boasts bold motifs and cheerful colors, such as bright red, yellow, orange and fuchsia, as well as the more basic black and white.

Indonesian designer Ardistia Dwiasri, who attended the fashion show, lauded the Fly Now collection.

“The collection has simple and easy-to-wear designs,” Ardistia said. “It answers the needs of today’s women and their fast-paced modern lifestyle.”
