Hollywood actor Ryan O’Neal has won a long and bitter legal battle over ownership of an Andy Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett, his late partner of 30 years.

A jury in Los Angeles decided the painting, said to be worth up to $12 million, belongs to O’Neal rather than to the University of Texas, to which Fawcett bequeathed her art collection when she died of cancer in 2009 aged 62. In a three-week trial, O’Neal, 72, gave emotional evidence. In the witness box he told the jury that he talked to the painting.

The actor said he did not plan to sell the painting and it would be passed to his and Fawcett’s son, Redmond.
