Bauer Publishing, whose magazines alleged Tom Cruise abandoned his young daughter Suri after his split from her mother, Katie Holmes, has reached a confidential settlement with the actor, who sued the so-called "sleaze peddlers" for $50 million last year.
The magazines "never intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned his daughter, Suri, and regret if anyone drew that inference from anything they published," according to a statement released Saturday by the Englewood Cliffs-headquartered media company (via the Los Angeles Times). How would readers have even gotten that idea? Perhaps from the headlines "Abandoned by daddy" (In Touch) and "Suri in tears, abandoned by her dad" (Life & Style). Maybe.
Cruise had sued for defamation and invasion of privacy, and while he appears to have won something for his troubles (his lawyer has said any money won would go to charity), it was not without further damage to his reputation. In a leaked deposition, Cruise appeared to agree with a defense lawyer who compared filming a movie to serving in Afghanistan, calling it "brutal." That led to an outburst from Mark Wahlberg, who publicly blasted actors who compare their careers with serving their country in combat.
