The family tradition did not stop there either, because Lucy, 31, married her Australian bridegroom Mark, 35, on the same date her grandparents exchanged vows 63 years ago.

The off-white gown cost six guineas (£6.30) when grandmother Mel married Ian Calder in South Kensington, London, in 1950. It was then worn by her daughter Penny in 1974, when she married Harry Dafforn in East Molesley, Surrey.

For Lucy’s wedding in Solva, Pembrokeshire, the dress was cleaned with a homemade mixture of aspirin and white vinegar.

“I’d always hoped one day I would get to wear it,” said Lucy.

“It was obviously meant to be because it fitted perfectly.”
