PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) — Mexicans across New Jersey are celebrating the patron saint of their homeland.

Thursday marks the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a depiction of the Virgin Mary that is beloved by Mexican Catholics.

In Passaic, where followers of Guadalupe say her image appeared in 2003 in a tree stump, people lit devotional candles in the pre-dawn hours Thursday at a shrine that was built on the site.

A nearby church, Our Lady of Fatima, was filled nearly to capacity as congregants listened to traditional mariachi songs.

A couple of young children were dressed in indigenous outfits to symbolize Juan Diego, the man who, according to the legend of the Virgin of Guadalupe, first saw her apparition on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City in 1531.
