The Little Miss Queen and her court will represent the community alongside the Tip-Up Pageant court during the annual festival Jan. 25-26 at Tip-Up Island in Quincy. </blockquote> <blockquote> The Little Miss competition will kick off this year’s festivities, followed by the Tip-Up Pageant Saturday night. Friday’s Little Miss Pageant will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday’s Queen Pageant will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 each night. </blockquote> <blockquote> This year’s pageant is directed by Alicia Gross and co-directed by Sheena Spielbusch. On Jan. 8 and 9 the Miss Teen Canada – World organization will be hosting its provincial pageant to determine the new Miss Teen Alberta – World, as well as its other Alberta representatives. In July, the new representatives will head to Toronto for a week-long adventure in the national pageant and crown Miss Teen Canada – World 2014! Do you have what it takes? My year as Miss Teen Lethbridge – World 2013 was simply amazing. I was provided experiences I will never forget. My journey began in January when I was introduced to the idea of the pageant by Angeline McDonald, owner of Bells and Bows Bridal Centre. After days of discussion and debate, I contacted the Miss Teen Canada – World organization and applied for the pageant. After a couple of interviews I received an email stating I was a delegate for the provincial pageant. The thoughts and feelings racing through my mind at the time were too numerous to count. I began to prepare for the pageant; finding an evening gown, getting in shape for the swimsuit competition, hair, shoes, headshots, practising interview questions, and the excitement built! I had no prior experience in pageants so I was naturally nervous when the day came. Upon arriving at the local pageant, I received all the training I required for the pageant – how to walk in an evening gown, how to stand, how to walk in a swimsuit, how to answer interview questions, etc. I met some amazing girls that I still talk to today and can call my friends. I worked with a choreographer from Toronto for the dance numbers, and I was given the opportunity to work with him again at the national pageant in Toronto. I was able to attend some wonderful fundraisers and events in Lethbridge during my reign as Miss Teen Lethbridge – World including a fashion show for the elderly, the Children’s Festival, Pink Shirt Day and more! I spent a week in Toronto training daily for the national pageant; photo shoots, video shoots, dance numbers, and practising the runway walk. I explored the city with the other delegates, going to the Toronto Zoo to see the Pandas and polar bears; to the top of the CN Tower; watching the Medieval Times Jousting Show; shopping at Eaton Centre; and of course performing at the national pageant at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. I am so fortunate to call Miss Teen Canada – World 2013, Jill Martin, my friend, along with many of the other competitors. I want to thank my sponsors, Lakeview Dental, Perish and Heinbecker Milling Co., Rapunzil’s Hair Salon, Purely Inspired Academy of Beauty, Candie Co, Colors Hair and Spa, SOL Tanning Co., and AXS Images. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>CARACAS, Venezuela - A former Miss Venezuela and her ex-husband were shot and killed and their 5-year-old daughter wounded when they resisted robbers by locking themselves inside their car after tire punctures disabled it on an isolated stretch of highway, police said Tuesday. The slaying of Monica Spear, 29, a popular soap-opera actress, and Thomas Henry Berry, a 39-year-old British citizen, was the latest high-profile crime in a country where killings are common in armed robberies and where rampant kidnapping has ensnared even foreign ambassadors and professional baseball players. Monday's killings followed a pattern in Venezuela of late-night assaults carried out by disabling cars with obstacles placed on roadways or by removing sewer covers. Spear and Berry were slain at about 10:30 p.m. between Puerto Cabello, the country's main port, and the provincial capital of Valencia. They were returning from vacation to Caracas on a badly maintained stretch of highway that is lightly traveled at that hour. Their four-door sedan hit "a sharp object that had been placed on the highway" which punctured at least two of its tires, the director of the country's investigative police, Jose Gregorio Sierralta, told reporters. Two tow trucks arrived almost immediately afterward, said Sierralta, and the attack occurred after the car had been lifted onto one of the trucks. Seeing the assailants coming, the travelers locked themselves inside and the assailants fired at least six shots, he said. "They fired with viciousness," President Nicolas Maduro said of the attackers in comments to state TV. Police in Puerto Cabello arrested five suspects, some under the age of 18, Sierralta added. It could not immediately be determined if Spear and Berry had called the tow trucks, or if any of the drivers were among those arrested for suspected involvement in the killings. The daughter, Maya, was in stable condition after treatment for a leg wound and was with relatives in Caracas, said Sierralta. The family had spent New Year's in the mountains of the western state of Merida then traveled to the plains, said Luis Carlos Dominguez, a longtime friend and former business associate of Berry. He said Berry was raised in Venezuela and ran a travel agency. "He knew Venezuela a lot better than many Venezuelans," said Dominguez, describing the slain couple as people "who really loved the country," had a good relationship despite their divorce and made it a point to vacation together. "They weren't together," he said. "But they were very attached for the benefit of their daughter." He said Venezuelans can only hope that their deaths bring "a bit more strength to the fight against crime." Violent crime soared during the 14-year rule of Hugo Chavez, who died of cancer last March. Venezuelans list crime as their most pressing worry. The country has one of the world's highest murder rates -- the United Nations has ranked it 5th globally -- and violent crime is so rampant that Venezuelans tend to stay home after dark. Spear's death triggered a wave of anger on social media directed at the government's poor record on crime. Maduro lamented "the loss of a very spiritual young woman" actively involved in various charities. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on Maduro to put aside political differences and unite "to win the fight against insecurity" that claimed nearly 25,000 lives last year. "It's an emergency." In response to the killings, Maduro announced that he would convene a security meeting on Wednesday that had originally been scheduled for the end of January. The meeting will bring together state governors and mayors of Venezuela's 79 most dangerous cities. According to the nonprofit Venezuelan Observatory of Violence, the oil-rich South American country's murder rate was 79 per 100,000 inhabitants last year. Government statistics put the rate lower. The nonprofit group says 95 percent of murders go unsolved. Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004, was 5th runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant the following year and had acted in numerous soap operas, most recently in "Pasion Prohibida" for the U.S.-based Telemundo network. She split her time between Caracas and south Florida, said Dominguez, while the England-born Berry lived in Caracas. Spear had more than 355,000 followers on Twitter and her feed over the last week included brief videos of vacation scenes sent on the popular Instagram service. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. </div> <div class='entry-content'> The most shocking part of the season premiere of “The Bachelor” Monday night? Not that 26-year-old Kansas City nurse Nikki Ferrell made a great first impression and will continue on in the competition. After all, have you seen the pretty part-time model? No, the shocker was that one of the bachelorettes didn’t seem all that impressed with hunky soccer player Juan Pablo Galavis after meeting him – and said as much aloud. Ouch! The poop hit the Twitter fan when Juan Pablo gave the most important rose of the night – the first one, saved for the woman who made the best first impression – to Canadian opera singer Sharleen Joynt, a handsome brunette who came from Germany to be on the show. As Juan Pablo raced through the mansion like a little boy to retrieve the first rose for her, viewers heard Sharleen say she didn’t feel instant chemistry with him. “It felt a little forced,” she admitted, shattering “The Bachelor” golden rule that every spoken thought about Juan Pablo begin with an orgasmic squeal. He was obviously smitten with her, however, explaining how he liked her elegant look and that her experiences of living overseas made her seem worldly. (Not hard to appear, really, in a group that included a kooky free spirit, a hypersexual massage therapist looking for a “man who wants to be rubbed by me” and a weepy, recently-dumped bride-to-be from Oklahoma.) But when Juan Pablo handed Sharleen the most coveted rose of the night, she looked at him with glorious, unadulterated shock. “Seriously?” she said. “Sharleen, will you accept this rose,” he asked her. Only after a handful of devastating, delicious, made-for-TV moments of pregnant pause she said, reluctantly: “Sure. Yes. Thank you, sir.” Love her! Hate her! “Sharleen is literally the least impressed #bachelor contestant ever. She is McKayla Maroney/Olympics levels of unimpressed. Ferrell, meanwhile, was upset that she didn’t score the first rose of the night. “It sucks it wasn’t me,” she griped. She had made a great first impression when she stepped out of the limo in front of “The Bachelor” mansion/set, where Juan Pablo met each of the 27 contestants one-by-one. To be honest, the bar wasn’t set very high. One woman showed up with a fake baby bump under her pink evening gown. You know, so Juan Pablo could see what she might look swollen with his child someday. One woman gave him a bracelet for his 4-year-old daughter. Awww. Another wore soccer shoes with her evening gown and kicked a soccer ball toward him. “I’m looking for a teammate,” she chirped. The hippie chick with the Woodstock flowers in her hair skipped shoes altogether. The music writer from Austin pulled into the courtyard pedaling a weird piano-bicycle, thus hitting more than one sour note. Another woman stood in such deafening, awkward silence in front of the beautiful bachelor man that you could literally hear crickets. Literally. Heard. Crickets. Ferrell played up her nursing background by arriving with a stethoscope and placing the working end of it on her chest so that Juan Pablo could hear the raw, animal beating of her excited heart. Score! As she walked away from him, he turned and watched the fetching blonde slink away in a curve-hugging, beaded black evening gown and he bit his hand, clearly enjoying the view. “No more limos!” he exclaimed. She continued to score points when he chose her for a brief, one-on-one meeting later. After he asked her her name again – “Nikki the nurse. Of course. Your heart. Boom, boom” – they chatted easily about her job at Children’s Mercy and about Kansas City, a town he apparently knows. “I like the downtown area,” he told Ferrell and hinted that the two might make a trip to KC together. “Maybe in a couple of months, we’ll figure it out,” he said. Ferrell was one of the first women to receive a rose during the show’s infamous elimination ceremony, where contestants who don’t get a rose are sent packing. Her competition going into next week includes the Florida single mom who connected with single-dad Juan Pablo; a prosecuting attorney from Atlanta; a TV reporter; a marketing executive from Chicago; the woman who brought her dog with her and – surprise! – the barefoot chick. Among those sent packing: The Oklahoma woman who had shared that her love life “totally sucks,” and the massage therapist and all of her essential oils. The online chatter from followers of the show – like blogger Reality Steve who apparently has already seen all the episodes – is that Ferrell comes across as this season’s villain among the women. Judging from the previews shown Monday night, there’s a boat-load of drama ahead. Search Begins for the Next Teen, Miss and Mrs. Humble 2014 - Your Houston News

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'><div class='content'> The search is on and applications are now being accepted for the titles of Miss Teen Humble, Miss Humble and Mrs. Humble International 2014. These women will have the honor of representing their area at the Texas International Pageant to be held at the Granville Arts Center in the Dallas, Texas, area March 14th to March 16th. A new Miss Teen Texas International, Miss Texas International and Mrs. Texas International will be crowned then, kick-starting a year unlike any other for the lucky ladies who will represent Texas, wearing the most beautiful crown in the Lone Star State. The International Pageant System recognizes ladies across the state, from teens to misses to married women, for their accomplishments and their desire to make a difference. “The Texas International system is something that dads and husbands can be proud of their daughters and wives participating in,” said Rachel Hedstrom, director of Texas International and former Mrs. Texas International 2012. “This is the kind of system that rewards women for who they are and what they want for themselves and their families.” No previous pageant experience is necessary, and there is no talent or swimsuit division. Married women compete in interview, fitness wear and evening gown, where they are escorted by their husbands on stage. Teen and miss contestants compete in interview, fitness wear and evening gown, as well as “fun fashion,” a category devoted to showing off their own personal style in an age-appropriate outfit of their choosing. “It’s all about celebrating women as they truly are, and showing a level of confidence as they sparkle on-stage,” said Hedstrom. Mrs. applicants must be married and between the ages of 21 and 56 as of July 1, 2014. Miss applicants must be unmarried and between the ages of 19 and 30, and teen applicants must be unmarried and between the ages of 13 and 18 as of July 1, 2014. The women selected as Miss Teen Humble, Miss Humble and Mrs. Humble will serve as ambassadors from the Humble area with an official title and sash. Other area titles are also available. The women crowned as Miss Teen Texas International, Miss Texas International and Mrs. Texas International 2014 will each receive a prize package valued in the thousands of dollars and the opportunity to represent Texas at the 2014 Mrs. International, Miss International or Miss Teen International Pageant in Florida in July. Mrs. Texas International 2013 Michelle Berndt is a mom of two and a fourth-generation breast cancer survivor who was crowned while wearing a wig, a result of her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She has spoken across the southwest and in the media about her campaign against cancer, and has been featured in a documentary about her mission. Miss Texas International 2013 Samantha Riddle is an advocate for heart disease awareness, and has lobbied the Texas State Legislature, working closely with the American Heart Association and serving myriad non-profit causes, for which she frequently makes appearances. Miss Teen Texas International 2013 Kylie Boyd is a student at Texas Tech University, where she is also a barrel racer. She has led the Polar Bear Plunge at Sea World of Texas, and has shot for National Geographic magazine, in which she will be featured later this year. “The International system allows women to be at their best and to chase their dreams,” said Hedstrom. “It’s not about fitting into an unrealistic norm; it’s about helping these women get to that next level and do something meaningful and fulfilling. He beat ‘I Wish’ by Waje, ‘Good Morning’ by Brymo and ‘Natural Something’ by Sound Sultan. Even Dr. Sid said he was rooting for Sound Sultan. The audience agreed no less when Davido won the award for the Best R&B album. He was nominated alongside Banky W, Flavour, Iyanya and Tuface. On a night when attendees at The Headies refused to be downcast by an annoying delay that stretched the take-off time of the event from 6pm to 10:45pm, their spirit came alive once the kaleidoscope of colours and sounds hit them and the MC backstage announced the commencement of the show. The first spectacle to hit the stage was a troupe of dancers. The audience was still enjoying what they had to offer when another surprise was brought on stage in the form of a replica of The Headies trophy, which was lowered amidst a smokescreen. The smoke had hardly cleared when the comperes for the show, Mavin Records artistes, Dr. Sid and Tiwa Savage, emerged. The hosts looked dashing in their impeccable attire. Comfort is chic. Elegance is in. Clydesdale-like platform shoes are out. In fact, while there are likely to be a few surprises in store, 2014 promises to be an excellent vintage, grown from subtler, more traditional fashion terroir. The new "It" color—purple—complements nearly every complexion. Some easy-wearing classics—preppy shirt patterns for men, cropped pants for women, and suits for everyone—will continue to rebound. Here's a look at the surprisingly friendly near future of fashion. Elegant Comeback Say "yes" to pinstripe suits and hosiery for daytime and to tuxedos and sequins as evening wear: Elegance is back, but with a very modern sense of ease. Rigid traditionalists may cringe at seeing sandals under a pressed pair of tuxedo pants, but Slim flat sandals will add a youthful touch to an evening gown. Gentlemen, break out your ties, and enjoy the option—not the requirement—of wearing them. Hail Nicolas Nicolas Ghesquière's much-anticipated return to the runway as designer of Louis Vuitton will dominate headlines during Paris Fashion Week in February, stealing some of the spotlight from Dior's Raf Simons and Saint Laurent's Hedi Slimane. Pay attention! The former Balenciaga designer, who gave us gladiator sandals, casts such a long shadow that other designers are already wondering what direction he'll send fashions. Fash-flation China giveth cheap apparel prices, and China taketh away. We can look forward to higher clothing prices in 2014, and much of the blame lies with rising labor costs in the world's largest producer of apparel. Fashion retailers are finally beginning to give mobile sites their due. While no one is suggesting we'll be buying clothes on Twitter (though imagine what that would have done for their IPO), truly convenient cellphone shopping will be possible this year. Supersize Me With ample access to online data, the fashion industry will show new attentiveness to actual consumer sizes. Many middle-aged men will welcome new "traditional" styles, which not only recall their dads but add an extra inch or two in the girth to trendy slim sizes. For American women—half of whom wear size 14 and up—the plus-size industry will continue expanding, more fashionably than ever. Stubble Stumble Metrosexuals are so 2004, but in 2014, men will come into their own as fashion victims. Overdesigned clothes and a plethora of manly hair and skin-care lines will enable carriers of Y chromosomes to make fashion choices just as ill-judged as those of the fairer sex. Whence Jil Sander? Soap operas can be mesmerizing, and this year we'll continue watching "As Jil Sander Turns" as the label maps out its future. Where will the designer, turn up next, now that Ms. Sander has dumped her eponymous brand for the third time? And what will come of the designer-less brand she left at the altar with fall 2014 yet to be designed? Tune in for the next segment in Milan this February. Logo Mania There's recently been a great deal of debate about whether logos are in, or out, or back in again. So here you have it: Logos won't disappear in 2014, but they'll be more subtle. Note Gucci's tone-on-tone double Gs. That handbag covered in initials? Ditch it already. Streetwear or not? Streetwear—boxing shorts, adapted weightlifting belts—is one of the most-discussed trendsetting styles these days—so much so that quite a few high-fashion designers have been trying it on for size. The look will remain niche—but an important niche: Look to emerging designers like Moscow's Gosha Rubchinskiy and Finland's Sasu Kauppi. Work(out) Wear One of the last taboos in office clothing will begin to fall, with a little help from the outdoor apparel industry. With brands like Ibex and Prana designing outdoor clothing stylish enough for the office, people will spend even more time in their exercise togs. This isn't the ubiquitous Spandex-y Lululemon look. Instead, it is new crossover styling, like washable wool T-shirts and trendy khakis, manufactured with the strong seams and sturdy fabrics of hiking clothes, but in styles the work just as well for the city. With Mickey and Minnie leading the fun, audiences enjoy breathtaking production numbers choreographed by Emmy Awardwinner Sarah Kawahara. Complementing Kawahara’s skate sequences are the memorable tunes compiled by music directors Art Kempel and Stan Beard, which bring the wonderful memories of Disney to life on ice. Scenic designer David Potts and lighting designer LeRoy Bennett create the mood and settings that showcase extraordinary Disney moments. Outfitting this cast of more than 60 characters was the challenge faced by costume designer Scott Lane. His designs range from Mickey’s Marching Band to the “It’s a Small World” dolls, to the stars of “Mulan” and “Finding Nemo.” The bright colors and minimal structure in the Nemo costumes allow the characters to move freely in order to mimic the natural movement in water. Renowned designer Bob Mackie also lends his talents to a red, sequined evening gown worn by Minnie. Scenic designer David Potts, who has worked on numerous Broadway productions, creates a theatrical atmosphere on ice. Skaters weave around and enliven the “It’s a Small World” sequence amid sparkling floats that turn into a radiant light parade. A blanket of snow and an avalanche fall as Mulan battles the Huns, and a giant present is opened to reveal Buzz Lightyear as he is first introduced to Woody and his pal Jessie. The shows — scheduled through Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.; and Jan. 4-5 at 11 a.m., 3 and 7 p.m. — take place at the Izod Center, East Rutherford. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Revenue growth in Taiwan's leasing business was flat in October as demand for machinery rentals fell, offsetting growth in leasing other items in reflection of the slow pace of the local economic recovery, government statistics showed Saturday. However, the October sales data stopped a three-month losing streak in the leasing industry, according to the statistics. Compared to last year, revenue in the leasing business in July, August and September fell 1.8 percent, 0.7 percent and 0.5 percent year-on-year, respectively. The October revenue, rose 0.1 percent from a year earlier and was up 2.9 percent from September's NT$6.8 billion, the statistics indicated. Citing the sales report, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said the local leasing sector generated NT$7 billion (US$233 million) in sales in October, with sales posted by the machinery rental segment down 14.1 percent year-on-year at NT$2.1 billion. The MOEA said the declining machinery leasing sales resulted from weakening demand from construction contractors in the month amid cautious sentiment toward the local property market in a slow economic recovery. On the other hand, revenue generated by the local transportation equipment rental segment rose 9.3 percent from a year earlier to NT$4.2 billion on rising demand for tour buses and other vehicles, the ministry said. The ministry said that as the local tourism sector intensified its efforts in launching promotion campaigns on short-term trips in Taiwan, the number of tourists increased, which boosted demand for transportation in the month. Sales generated from other items, including furniture and evening gown leasing for October, fell 0.6 percent from a year earlier to NT$700 million, the statistics showed. In the first 10 months of this year, revenue posted by the local leasing sector totaled NT$67.5 billion, up 1.8 percent from a year ago, according to the statistics. In October, sales posted by the local information service sector grew 4.4 percent from a year earlier to NT$24.8 billion with revenue generated by computer system design services, which included software development, up only 1.8 percent year-on-year amid fiercer-than-ever competition. However, the data processing segment enjoyed a 17.7 percent year-on-year increase in sales on the back of the booming online marketing and electronics information integration businesses, the ministry said. In the first 10 months of this year, revenue posted by the information services sector rose 4.3 percent from a year earlier to NT$235.8 billion. The MOEA said sales in the professional technology services sector which refers to management consulting, advertising/market research, interior design, and photo studio operations, rose 5.1 percent year-on-year in October to NT$20.8 billion.
