DAMIEN DELANEY will make his competitive debut at the ripe old age of 32 in Cologne tonight wearing a smile as wide as the Rhine.

The man who was about to quit football last summer to do triathlons has seen his career graph spike spectacularly late in the day and a full cap against Germany this evening would be the cream on top. A nice easy one to start?

"Of course it is daunting," said Delaney. "Germany are a top side and it will be a difficult evening.

"But all 23 players are looking in the same direction. If we have a game plan and we stick to it, who knows what might happen."

Delaney has always had a sanguine view of life and rarely gets overexcited about anything. He won't be starting tonight.

"It's another game of football and I'm not going to get too worried about it," he said. "If I play, great, If I don't, the lads who do start will play their part. I'll definitely give it my all. Everyone in the squad is the same. We will do whatever we possibly can," he added, brimming as ever with enthusiasm.
