Hugh Jackman is ready for another solo outing as Wolverine.

Word came Tuesday that “The Wolverine” director James Mangold is in negotiations to write a treatment for Fox for a sequel to this summer’s “The Wolverine,” which saw Jackman’s lethal mutant travel to Japan.

The story line for the sequel is being kept under wraps for the time being, but “X-Men” veteran Lauren Shuler Donner will produce the film.

In an interview with Hero Complex this year, Jackman said he first read the landmark 1980 comic book by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller that inspired “The Wolverine” when he was shooting Bryan Singer’s original “X-Men,” and was immediately struck by the moody, introspective qualities of the saga and the nuanced portrait it offered of its angry, violent anti-hero and his exploits in Japan.

“The guy who is the outsider, emblematic in a way of anti-authority, anti-tradition, anti-honor, anti-code, is in Japan with all these samurai and ninjas,” Jackman said. “I think it’s the perfect juxtaposition for this guy who doesn’t think, he’s emotional. He acts and then has to deal with the fallout from it.

“The Wolverine” has earned $413 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing “X-Men” film.

Jackman, of course, will be seen as Wolverine next year in Singer’s anticipated “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” also inspired by a famous Claremont comic story line.

“Days of Future Past” opens in theaters May 23, 2014.
