Matt Lauer and Al Roker of "The Today Show" will undergo every man's least favorite diagnostic medical procedure Thursday morning — on live television.
As part of a month-long campaign to raise aware of men's health issues, Lauer and Roker will have prostate exams on-camera during the show.

The procedure involves a manual digital examination of the prostate gland to determine whether its size and shape are normal.
It is often part of routine physical checkups for men, though some elect to bypass it because of the discomfort.

It is considered one of the tools, along with PSA tests, that can detect the early stages of prostate cancer.

It is also one of the most common. Doctors also say that most men who live long enough will eventually develop prostate cancer.
The exam, however, causes most men to shudder. In an "NYPD Blue" scene a decade ago, Dennis Franz's Andy Sipowicz pointedly wisecracked about disliking it.

Presumably the exams for Lauer and Roker will be filmed discreetly, as was the case in 2000 when then-"Today" cohost Katie Couric underwent a live colonoscopy to raise awareness of colon cancer.
Couric also underwent a mammogram on live TV in 2005.
