Where are the rest of The Avengers during the events of "Thor: The Dark World?" Any audience member who saw the blockbuster pic this weekend was probably wondering where Iron Man, Captain America, even The Hulk were while Thor was trying to save London from an other-worldly onslaught. Luckily, MTV News' Josh Horowitz was able to get the scoop on the Marvel Studios timeline while out on the "Thor" red carpet.
"I don't know, they were probably having pancakes at IHOP or something," Jaimie Alexander (who stars in the movie as Sif) joked. Meanwhile, Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, had some more specific ideas. "Captain America is doing some shopping, Iron Man is fixing his suit, and Hulk was... I think he was on a holiday somewhere?"
Getting in on the act, even Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige poked some fun at The Avengers' expense. "They have a 'no going to London' policy," Feige quipped.
More seriously, Director Alan Taylor clarified that despite how it might seem in the movie, there was a relatively clear picture as to why Thor's friends don't help the God of Thunder. "There's always a one or two minute conversation, oh god, where the hell is Iron Man?" Taylor added.
Continuing, Taylor said that some lip service was paid in the movie, notably that there was no one really in London able to alert the authorities. The exception was Kat Dennings' Darcy, who calls international spy organization S.H.I.E.L.D. off-screen, but they don't take her seriously.
Feige continued, saying that events in the Marvel Phase 2 films, which include "The Dark World" as well as "Iron Man 3" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," are all happening very quickly. In fact, both "Iron Man 3" either takes place concurrently with "The Dark World," or directly after.
As fans of Marvel's phase one films may -- or may not -- know, Marvel Studios is no stranger to a compressed timeline: most of "Iron Man 2," "The Incredible Hulk," "Thor," and the end of "Captain America" all take place in the same week.
As for Phase 2? "They don't have time to assemble, to get them all together," Feige said. "As we will see in next year's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' S.H.I.E.L.D. is very busy."
"Thor: The Dark World" is currently in theaters.
