Kimball Gainor was crowned Miss Seattle in November, according to her mother, Carole Gainor. Kimball grew up in Bellingham and is a senior at Western Washington University. She was sponsored by the Bellingham Food Bank.
She was the overall winner in interview, swimsuit, and evening gown, and performed a figure skating routine onstage to take the title. She won three scholarship awards totaling $2,450 and entry to the Miss Washington program next summer.
Carole said Kimball will be bringing her READ! program, which she began at the Bellingham Public Library, to Seattle Children's Hospital and that she plans on spending a great deal of her reign using her crown and sash to encourage children to read.
GOLDEN APPLES AWARDED
Blaine Middle School Vice Principal Molly Mitchell-Mumma and teacher Dawn Cottnair received the Whatcom County Library System's Golden Apple Award at the recent All Friends Gathering in Ferndale. The annual award honors educators who have gone above and beyond to strengthen young people's connections with books, reading, and libraries, according to a press release.
COLLEGE DIVERSITY HONORED
Susan Given-Seymour of Northwest Indian College received the National Extension Diversity Award by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, according to a press release that went on to say:
'This award is a tremendous honor for Susan, her staff, the college, and tribal colleges as a whole," said Justin Guillory, president of Northwest Indian College, in a press release. "This award is not only a testament to the hard work and dedication of her outstanding staff, but it is also a reflection of her steady-handed leadership and commitment to providing quality, cultural based extension programming so that our tribal communities may benefit and grow as a result. The college continues to thrive because of quality people like Susan."
Susan has led the school's director of outreach and community education and director of cooperative extension since February of 1990. Students at the college come from more than 100 sovereign nations.
"Through cooperative extension we promote the diversity of cultural knowledge within these nations, working with family wellness, food sovereignty, financial independence, and ecosystems, to promote a better quality of life," Susan said.
MOUNT BAKER FFA WINS
Members of the Mount Baker FFA chapter were one of 40 teams participating in the National FFA forestry career event in Louisville, Ky, according to a press release. The team, led by advisor Todd Rightmire, was awarded a silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 156 other participants. Hunter Gates and Trevor Richner received gold emblems and Jacob Oiness and Jamie Vanderyacht received silver emblems.

Leslie Lekos of Bellingham is raising money online for her friend Evangeline Dagg who is 8 months pregnant and whose fiance died from pancreatic cancer.
