It's all on the line for the top 20 singers of The Voice Season 5, who take the stage for their first live show performances this week on the NBC stable.
Adam Levine and Blake Shelton’s teams were first on tap last night, as some crumbled under the pressure while others soared with some solid covers.
If last night was any indication, Blake Shelton's three-season reign at the top may be tenuous. Let's take a look at the singers' performances Monday ...
Tessanne Chin: "Many Rivers to Cross" - The Voice
Team Adam Levine's Tessanne Chin, the show-stopping Jamaican singer, closed the episode with “Many Rivers to Cross” by Jimmy Cliff, and it was terrific.
James Wolpert: "A Case of You" - The Voice
James Wolpert channeled his experience with collegiate a cappella and his struggles for money for a heartfelt take on Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.”
Grey: "Still Into You" - The Voice
Grey was pushed out of her comfort zone a bit and rocked out to Paramore’s “Still Into You.” She struggled with pitch a bit, at times, but was alright.
Will Champlin: "Secrets" - The Voice
Will Champlin, who revealed that his wife has cancer, returned to Team Adam with a bare-bones version of OneRepublic’s “Secrets.” It was great.
Preston Pohl: "Nothin' on You" - The Voice
Preston Pohl put his spin on both the singing and rapping sections of B.o.B. and Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ on You,” something Nic Hawk would also try.
Shelbie Z.: "Fancy" - The Voice
Team Blake Shelton's Shelbie Z brought her rock-country attitude to Reba McEntire’s “Fancy," earning praise from the judges (as did all the singers).
Nic Hawk: "Blurred Lines" - The Voice
Nic Hawk took on the hit “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, Pharrell and T.I., while the judges sat shocked that he performed each musician’s part.
Ray Boudreaux: "Home" - The Voice
Ray Boudreaux did his “swamp pop” thing on Marc Broussard’s “Home," though he seemed almost overwhelmed by the audience’s enthusiasm throughout.
Austin Jenckes: "She Talks to Angels" - The Voice
Austin Jenckes was assigned The Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels.” Cee Lo proclaimed The Voice the best show over. At least partly due to Austin?
Cole Vosbury: "Maggie May" - The Voice
Cole Vosbury, with Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May,” delivering another skilled performance that left no room for error and solidified him as a real contender.
Teams Christina and Cee Lo get their turn tonight.
