It appears Marvel has cast its latest superhero.

Seasoned comedy actor Paul Rudd is in early negotiations to play "Ant-Man," the brilliant scientist turned super-human, Variety reports.

Rudd had been a frontrunner for the part, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who just yesterday announced he will produce a film based off Vertigo's "The Sandman" comic series.

Known for his roles in "Role Models," "Knocked Up" and the "Anchorman" series, Rudd is a newbie to the action scene, but it's fair to imagine him as a biochemist transforming into a quirky hero.

Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World") will direct the film, and co-wrote the script with Joe Cornish, Variety said.

Marvel Studios announced in September that "Ant-Man" will scurry into theaters July 31, 2015 instead of the original November release date. The push-up bumps the film into the same whirlwind summer season as the looming blockbuster "Man of Steel" sequel.

As far as the Ant-Man plot goes, here's a synopsis from IMDB.com: Pym, a biochemist creates a size-altering formula using his discovery of a group of subatomic particles. His first test on himself goes haywire, but he launches an instrument that allows him to communicate and control insects.
