PORTLAND -- The Portland Winterhawks (4-3-0-1) scored five second period goals en route to a 7-4 win over the Kamloops Blazers (2-7-0-0) Saturday at the Moda Center in front of 7,701 fans.
Portland opened the scoring at the 14:32 mark of the first on a delayed penalty when Adam Rossignol banged in a rebound during a goalmouth scramble to make it 1-0. The Blazers tied the game under a minute later on a goal by Aspen Sterzer to even the game at 1-1, which remained the score going into the second.
The two teams then combined for seven goals in a wild second period, beginning when Derrick Pouliot scored a power play goal on a blast from the point just 59 seconds into the frame to make it 2-1. Just under two minutes later Brendan Leipsic scored on a shot from the left faceoff circle to extend the lead to 3-1.
Kamloops got one back at the 3:48 mark when Chase Souto scored on a power play to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Hawks responded just 45 seconds later when Presten Kopeck sprung Chase De Leo with a long stretch pass to send De Leo in alone, and he poked the puck five-hole on netminder Taran Kozun to give Portland a 4-2 lead.
Minutes later while shorthanded, Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up the puck in the Portland end and blew past the Blazers’ defenders on a breakaway, where he was hauled down and awarded a penalty shot. On the attempt, Bjorkstrand went high over Kozun’s shoulder for the goal and a 5-2 lead.
Kamloops then pulled Kozun and replaced him in goal with Bolton Pouliot. Kamloops pulled within two at the 13:04 mark on the second of the night from Souto to cut the Hawks’ lead to 5-3, but Portland responded when Alex Schoenborn scored on a shot from the right faceoff circle at the 15:32 mark to put the Hawks up 6-3, which rounded out the scoring in the period.
It remained 6-3 until the Blazers’ Cole Ully scored with 2:30 remaining to cut it to 6-4, but Pouliot added a late empty net goal as the Hawks finished with a 7-4 win.
Bjorkstrand and Pouliot each finished with three points, while Josh Hanson, Nic Petan and Schoenborn all had two apiece.
Brendan Burke earned the win in net with 22 saves on 26 shots. Kozun allowed five goals on 29 shots before being replaced, while Pouliot stopped 12 of 13, followed by the empty net goal.
The Hawks were 2-6 on the power play, and 6-7 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded goal.
The Hawks are back in action Wednesday against the Tri-City Americans at 7 p.m. at the Moda Center.
